public preview of Windows Blue (8.1)
Windows 8.1, a free update to Windows 8 that is coming later this year, and a pre-release version is available now for you to try. Windows 8.1 has new ways for you to personalize your PC and includes several new apps and services.
Is the Start button back? Well, yes and no - there is a Start button when you are in desktop mode but it merely brings you to the new Start Screen (a.k.a. Metro). It does not act like the Start button we know from previous versions of Windows.
However, you now have the option to boot directly to the desktop, instead of the Start Screen (which is still the default). Look at our screenshot to see how to change the settings to boot into desktop mode.
There are many other changes that address some of the usability issues on non-touch devices, as well as better customization options and other enhancements.
Tip: To test Windows 8.1 for yourself without messing with your current system, download the ISO file and then install VMWare Player and then create a virtual machine by loading the Windows 8.1 ISO file.
This download is delivered as .ISO file which needs to be burned to a disk or used from a bootable USB drive. Since this is a preview version, it is not recommended to replace your current operating system with this one unless you have proper backup and restore routines in place.
