memory diagnostic tool Memtest86 is a standalone memory diagnostic tool that runs from a CD on system boot. It executes a series of numbered test sections to check for errors. These test sections consist of a combination of test algorithm, data pattern and cache setting. The execution order for these tests were arranged so that errors will be detected as rapidly as possible. Tests 8, 9, 10 and 11 are very long running extended tests and are only executed when extended testing is selected. Memtest86 supports all types of memory and can be run on any operating system. The best there is 5 stars by OnePiece Aug 10, 2013 (Read all my 12 reviews)
This program, as well as memtest86+, are the best memory (RAM) test programs you can find. It implements the most important memory testing algorithms (there are more advanced algorithms out there, but those would take much more time and are suited to specific types of memory only), so you get a quite good coverage of memory faults. For some time this version was not supported, but recently Passmark took up support so it should be up-to-date again. Use either this (I didn't have any problem of burning this to a bootable CD, although nowadays I rather put this to a bootable USB disk), or memtest86+, and you cannot go wrong. show Review details
Good at what it does 5 stars by gimpguy Sep 15, 2008 (Read all my 1159 reviews)
I use this for all memory tests and basically, it detects when ram is bad and is very thorough. It's easy to use, free, and is trusted for results by many techs. I feel it's a must have. show Review details
Memtest86+ 4 stars by btk1w1 Dec 03, 2006 (Read all my 5 reviews)
I recently bought 2 new sticks of ram for a home pc that I wanted to run a test on. I tried unsuccessfully to use memtest86 as I was unable to burn iso image to disk. After researching I found another version, memtest86+, based on the original mtest86, and was able to use the guide to burn a bootable disk and run the program. I let it run for a couple of hours in which it stringently ran 10 different tests, gave diagnostics and thankfully found no errors with the ram. show Review details
