Atlantis Word Processor

Portable it is not

This app is advertised as 'portable.' That it is not. It not only writes new folders and files to your PC, but entries to your registry, as well. That is certainly not my definition of 'portable.'

I have been using another RAM Disk software for a number of years, but this replaced it. It does everything the vast majority of users could ask for. My only suggestion is to allow the user to put the RAMDiskWS.xml file in the program folder (instead of the ProgramData folder) to keep all files in the same folder.

FreeFileSync

One major option still missing...

This would and should be one of the best folder synchronization utilities available with one exception: There is no way to set a 'default' set of folders for the application to open up to. Instead, it opens to whatever two folders were last used. It stands to reason that a Sync Utility would either allow the user to choose the default folders, or at the very least open to the top level of folders on the two drives - e.g., C: and D:. In past versions at least the user could set the GlobalSettings,xml file to Read Only to get around this issue, but that is no longer possible.

CCleaner Portable

At least one tiny problem remains...

At least one problem remains in the latest version - V3.20.1750. If you COPY either your SendTo menu or your Program Files menu (or any part of it) to a TEMP folder and then delete the copy from there to the Recycle.Bin, CCleaner will delete the folder contents (the .lnk files) but not those folders themselves. Looking in Windows Explorer, it APPEARS that CCleaner deleted them, but viewing them through a superior file manager such as XYplorer, or better yet from the Command Line, you will see those folders still exist. Other than this one fairly insignificant annoyance, it's one of the greatest utilities out there. Keep up the great work, Piriform!

Eusing YouTube to MP3 Converter

Outstanding!

Until I discovered this beauty, I used YouTubeDownloaderHD to download videos and them converted them to MP3s with XMedia Recode - two separate processes. This puppy does it all at one time. Highlight and 'copy' the title of the video you wish to convert and upon opening Eusing Free YouTube to MP3 Converter, it's already there just waiting for you to click 'Start.' It will also allow you to convert the downloaded FLV file to WMV, if you wish, along with the ability to choose several different MP3 sound qualities. I especially like the fact that this gem is completely portable. All settings are written to an INI file in the app folder, leaving the registry clean, as well as not writing to the User folder. Tnank you, Eusing. It's fantastic!

Youtube Downloader HD

It's fantastic!

I've tried a number of downloaders, but this one comes out on top every time. It's not only simple to use, but free on top of that. I use it to download music videos and then use XMedia Recode to separate the MP3 audio from the FLV Video file.

Windows 7 Manager

It keeps getting better

This fantastic utility just keeps getting better and better. I have used it daily since Windows Vista was first introduced some years ago. It contains many, many Windows 7 tweaks along with a registry cleaning utility, as well as registry backup. This one is really worth the price.

Startup Delayer

A fantastic utility

I have used Startup Delayer for at least ten years and wouldn't be without it. If you want icons arranged in a specific order in your tray or if you want to control which applications start at certain times during startup, this is the last piece of software you will need. And it's FREE, as well.

It's the best i have found

I tried a lot of Gmail notifiers before settling on Scott's. It does everything you want or need a notifier to do, is completely portable and it's FREE. What else do you need to know before trying it?

It's outstanding

It not only tells you dang near everything you would possibly want to know about your system, but it's portable and FREE! What more could you ask for?

ClearLock

Could use some enhancements.

It works good 'as is', but could use a little enhancing to make it 'very good.' For example, the ability to change the default sound. At a minimum, don't compress the EXE file, so that advanced users may modify the sound as they please. Next, allow the user to minimize the Password box to the tray and restore it with a user defined key combination. This would make for a nice, clean screen while ClearLock is active. There may be more, but those are the main ones. -- Editor's note: The password box completely disappears from view after a few minutes and becomes visible again once you use the mouse or keyboard. --

Don`t Sleep

Excellent!

Been using 'nosleep' for years until I discovered this beauty. Does exactly what it says - suspends your screensaver for a predetermined amount of time and then re-enables it and exits. Works great, it's portable and it's FREE !

Metapad

Outstanding !

I've tried almost all of them, and Metapad is THE BEST notepad replacement I have seen in years. It does everything that notepad does and much more, including the ability to render RTF files, which many notepad replacements won't do. You can look all day long, but you won't find a better notepad replacement than Metapad.

Great - but pricey

I must agree wholeheartedly with gbjennings. This is indeed the best registry editor around, but it is still a bit expensive compared to others, including a few free regedit replacements.

It's outstanding !

I am a huge fan of Nir Sofer, and this utility is no exception to the rule. It works great and I find it far easier to use than wading through Microsoft's file and folder options to accomplish the same thing. And, as opposed to an earlier comment, you can indeed make system changes with this program. My guess is the last reviewer is not familiar with the context menu. ;-)

Hide Folders 2012

This little application really rocks !

I tried many others, but Hide Folders 2009 does exactly what I (or anyone else) need to keep sensitive information from prying eyes. It is capable of showing folders when you open it with a password and closing them automatically upon application close. All you have to do it try it to agree it's the best around.

Same problem !

I reviewed this product over 9 months ago and gave it a poor rating because it totally wiped out all of my Vista restore points. Now here we are 9 months later and V3.35 does exactly the same thing ! Great... If you are a Vista user, you have been warned!

The best in my humble opinion

Eraser

Works great

Fantastic secure deletion utility with the additional ability to securely delete your hard drive`s free space. One thing I would like to see added is the ability to pick and choose the type of erasure for the recycle bin instead of having all seven choices to choose from each time I attempt to erase my recycle bin.

Vista Manager

It's a great utility but...

This monster has sooo many tweaks. Almost mind boggling. Really a great piece of software BUT it is definitely a bit on the pricey side, considering less expensive and even free ones available. The author would do well to reduce the price by $10 or $15 so that more people might purchase this great utility.

CCleaner (Slim)

It's the best - bar none !

This little jewel is the best system cleaning utility out there, period. Main reason is that it is customizable, allowing the user (with a bit of computer savvy) to edit an INI file and delete and clean up what THEY want to, both files and registry content. Thanks for a wonderful tool!
