I have Windows XP and recently switched to Thunderbird's stand-alone email. This little program does exactly what I want it to do. I have the icon just above my Thunderbird icon and check my email through this program when I think of it, delete the junk, and download what I want to read into Thunderbird. For me, it's perfect!

The program is very useful. I like it with one reservation. The connection to some pop3 servers is refused - I do not know why. And it can not be used with pop.gmail.com
