I always use closed captioning on the TV just to make it easier to determine what everyone is saying. I now download a lot of movies and TV shows in AVI format. They rarely ever have subtitles or captioning. Sublight has been able to find subtitles for every movie or TV show that I've tried. It's updated regularly, is free, and works great. The GUI is a little busy when you first try it, but I quickly realized I only need to use a small subset of the input boxes and buttons. I highly recommend it.
