The best, no matter the price!
avast! Home Edition
I have tried them all in the past 20 years. Avast will work when others won't. The "boot-time" scan can kill an in memory virus. Wow what a great program, they should get an award! It beats all others hands down!

The one that works! but...
Spyware Terminator
Great program but it has too many features. The real time protection does not play nice with other anti-virus/spyware packages. Spyware Terminator has been ineffective at removing "Conflicker" Malwarebytes is better at this function.

A useful widget
Hexagora Performance Monitor
I was looking for something very simple, that was not too distracting, to give me a sense of system activity. This was a really good fit. I wasn't impressed with it in the toolbar, but I really like it on the screen. It moves easily if it gets in the way. Thank You Author.

Best and fastest
DTaskManager
Wish it had command line or hot keys to trim RAM to all processes. If anyone knows how please share. Overall the best Task Manager replacement I have ever used.

Simply the best,.. but
Opera
I agree with most of the positive comments for Opera,.. it's my default browser and I couldn't imagine my PC without it, although I sometimes stray to Firefox only because of McAfee Site Advisor. Now, if only Opera could get their act together and make it "Site Advisor" compliant,.. I would never again be unfaithful !

Indispensable
Send To Toys
This is one of those utilities that is hardly known but shouldn't be. Just right click on a shortcut, file, or folder, and send it where you want it to go. With this program, you can send shortcuts to the quick-launch bar, create shortcuts on the desktop, send data to an application of your choice, and much more. This program blends in so well that it's easy to forget it's an installed application and not part of the Windows system itself.

Great user interface
Rename Master
One of the things I noticed about most renaming tools is, they are so complex in configuring that you might as well do it using the system`s own rename feature. This program is very user friendly with easy to understand steps as well as help on getting started. Anybody can use this in a matter of minutes. Thanks to the developer for this FREE program. Well done!

Excellent! Highly recommended
MultiMon Taskbar
I have 4 monitors and use this for 3 of them. The 4th - an inner one- is not recognized by MultiMon. The main monitor, the left monitor and the right-most use MultiMon. The monitor to the left of the right-most monitor does not get MultiMon's taskbar, nor does the screen switching work. No problem - I use that monitor to handle MS Word when I take notes and don't need it to have MultiMon. - There is one small bug. Sometimes the 2ndary monitor's taskbar floats up 1/2 inch from the bottom of the monitor. The solution is to unload the taskbar with a right click, and start it up again. It takes 2 seconds. -This is a very useful program. You can use the keyboard shortcut keys - Control/Alt/right or left arrows- to move your program to a different monitor.

Excellent software
MP3 Quality Modifier
This prog works spot on, I reduced a 9.3 mb mp3 to 1.96 mb with no loss of quality. It is free and even better, it`s portable. 10 out of 10. I will be makeing a donation if I can on the authors website.

Liked this
Puran Defrag Free Edition
A good range of features to play with here, and more versatile than the default Windows defrag tool. Don't expect huge improvements in performance after using a defrag tool, because this is hype. Puran Defrag Free Edition is definitely worth a look.

Simple, effective, strong and free
USB Safeguard
Simple, Effective, Strong and FREE as well, what else can you ask for. It's really a very good app with a small footprint. The one I found after sieving out the web for months! Highly recommended.

No portable version
ZipGenius
I used ZipGenius for a while but dropped it when it became clear that no portable version would ever be released. Beside that is was a bit bloated.

Choose something else
WavePad
I am not an audio engineer, but simply have a hobby of ripping music from my old vinyl(and acetate). I tried Wave Pad, though found the recording quality to be unacceptable. The function of click/pop removal removed far too much--where a chisel would have been indicated, it acted as a back hoe, making the music sound very clipped and tinny. The only feature that was kind of cool was one that let you cue up several features to be run sequentially. However, the resultant music quality was unacceptable. By the time I started looking for ways to tweak the performance, the trial time was over and I could not access those functions again without purchasing the program.

Been using it for over 3 years
Eusing Free Registry Cleaner
I have been using Eusing Free Registry Cleaner for over 3 years now, and have never had 1 issue with this free program. I've recommended it to my brother, and he has never complained once. The program is idiot proof, and if your unsure, you can always back up your registry before making changes (recommended).

Best of its kind
Active@ Disk Monitor (Free Version)
I have tried other similar apps, but this one works and works well. It enables you to see the temp of your hard drive in the system tray (by the clock), and you choose the colors, including for alerts (high temp., etc.) which it enables, and it offers other basic info on all drives. Low on system resources, and such should be standard on PCs.

Should be standard on all PCs
WinPatrol
This is a needed quality piece of software, which exposes the clandestine practices of many software companies, including Microsoft. It has a EULA that you wish all software had, and simply doe sits job. Supplement this with Startup Control Panel, anther simply but helpful utility. I thank God for such developers.

Best of its kind, the Firefox of word pros
OpenOffice
I have been blessed to be able to use OpenOffice for about 10 years, upgrading from the early versions, and have use it extensively for writing, including using tables, frames, etc. I have tried other free Word Pros, but Open Office has been the best by far. Having never really used MS Office, i cannot compare the two, but wonder if it is as customizable as Open Office. You can create and modify toolbars, and create keyboard shortcuts (an save the latter config), and many extensions are available for it, such as enables you to save sessions (reopen all documents you were working on). It has more to learn from Firefox (it lacks themes, and tabs for switching open documents would a help), and contacting developers is an issue. The jumping cursor - caused by a scrolled documents reverting to the last cursor position when the save auto recovery info (a good option) kicks in - and jumping frames/images, has yet to be fixed, but this is a premier piece of freeware. Thank God for OOo

Amazed it`s free
EASEUS Partition Master
I thought for sure I'd have to pay to get a partition manager that could add disk space to my main drive, but this program easily converted the space with no problems whatsoever. I actually registered with Snapfiles just so I could come back and give this product an A+ review. Uninstalled it after use with no problems, very impressed with this product.

Very good and scary too
PasswordFox
As Gimpguy said in his 1980 review,"wow"! Its fast and gives you a list to save as text or as HTML in seconds. Yet, its scary to see all your passwords so easily available with a special program. I'm glad no one goes on my computer but me. Have to wonder what happens when you send it in for repair...hmmm. Thanks to the developer for this FREE program.

Excellent but Asian characters cause problems
SyncBack
This is a great program but files with any Asian characters in them fail to copy. Would be great if this was also supported so I don't need to rename files (e.g. in movie and mp3 titles). Thanks for the excellent work.

Goes beyond normal defragmenters
Contig
Used to compact a 30GB file that other two defragmentation program wouldn't compact and to make another brand new 30GB contiguous file. Works fine (defragmentation passed from 14 to 2 frags), really easy to use even if only has DOS command line. NOTE: to make a brand new file, you have to specify the file size in bites, not KB or whatsoever (the help doesn't specify it).

My favorite, by far
XYplorer
I have used all the others, and now I swear by XYplorer. I used Directory Opus for a couple years, but as full-featured as it is, it's loaded with limitations and nonsensical design features. XYplorer lets me preview files, change attributes, and navigate the entire file system in the easiest manner.

Good for PDF files
STDU Explorer
This program lets you look inside a PDF without opening it, and its quick. As a picture viewer, I'd not recommend it. The PDF part allows you to scroll from page to page, but the picture viewer only views whichever picture you click on and wont to to "NEXT" picture. Otherwise, its a nice viewer if you want to glance inside PDF files without totally opening them up.

Good, and getting better
Google Chrome
It's still new and has a ways to go. Version 4 is now "stable" and brings a lot of useful enhancements (extensions support!). It's a particularly good browser for accessing the Google apps sites. I'm not going to stop using Firefox for most everything (yet--I'm not sure I like some of Mozilla's recent decisions about what to integrate into the base Firefox code [Personas for instance]), but Chrome is definitely worth using, and getting better with every new release.

Works fine
YouTube HD Transfer
No problems here, does what it says on the tin. Easy to use, and a standalone program so it is not linked to a specific browser. Works only with YouTube videos (not Metacafe etc) but apart from that it is fine.

Very effective and reliable
Easy Hi-Q Recorder
Have been using this for some months now, very effective and reliable. Can have speakers off while recording. An auto recording level option exists so no need to fine-adjust the volume with every recoding start - an invaluable feature. In trial mode, up to 96 kbps MP3 recording from your sound card is possible for unlimited recording duration. This quality level I find adequate for the car. Might go to the full version (can record to WMA, OGG and on timed schedule), a 20% price drop would have clinched it.

Slow but very thorough
Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery
I have tried a number of different recovery software and they all seem to recover the same number of images but this Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery is quite different. Slow but very thorough. I have gotten more pictures than the others so if you want to recover as much as you can, try this but be prepared to WAIT.
