It has to be pointed out that the program runs within Windows, so it cannot erase the partition from which it is running. This means that complete erasure of a hard drive system (eg prior to selling or donating the computer) is impossible. The freeware DBAN (which is bootable) can do this, but an area where Hard Drive Eraser scores is that it will recognize USB hard drives and Flash memory devices attached to the computer, which DBAN will not. This makes HDE a useful utility to have when erasure of external devices is required. The default setting for erasure is DoD short (3 pass random overwrite), and others can be selected. As usual, care is needed in backing up any important files before using a file wiping tool.
