AutoFTP PRO

qleft  Used with dial up connection  qright

AutoFTP PRO version 4.8
  • Interface: 3
  • Features: 3
  • Ease of use: 3
  • Value: 1
  • Overall: 2

I have to stay this software is buggy when used with a dial up connection. Not sure about direct access feature. The software is very unclear about start-up when starting windows. Sometimes it would start on its own and others I would have to preform a manual start. The software would dial a connection and attempt a transfer. Sometime it would disconnect and other times it would lock and not be able to transfer without a restart. Much too buggy for my application. One other little bit - the program will run another program when a transfer is run. If a transfer is skipped it will still run the program. Would be nice to have the option to only execute if a transfer takes place

DupKiller
  • Freeware
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista

qleft  Does a good job  qright

DupKiller version 0.6.2 beta
  • Interface: 4
  • Features: 4
  • Ease of use: 3
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 4

The first thing I loved is - NO INSTALL NEEDED. Why can't all software be as self contained. It is very fast compared to duplicate software I have used in the past. The interface needs a little work but the defaults work very well in most cases. Overall - great software for what it does.

SyncBack

qleft  Better than most paid packages  qright

SyncBack version 3.2.8.500
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I have tested and purchase several different packages for backup and sync of files and folders. This has all the features and then some. I like the fact that it starts in a quick mode for set up and you are done in a couple of minutes. There is also an expert button for configuration obsessive users such as myself. No software is perfect but I cant tell enough people about this great package. I have not tried the Pro version yet but that is around the corner.

@MAX Tray Player
  • Free Trial ($.00)
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP

qleft  Will not play some file formats  qright

@MAX Tray Player version 1.01b
  • Interface: 3
  • Features: 1
  • Ease of use: 3
  • Value: 1
  • Overall: 2

It would seem that some file formats will not play in tray player. Once I drag and drop a file it starts to play the file and then drops into stop mode. The same file is tried in WMP 9 and Zoom player and have not problems so I know it is not the file. This has happened with MP3, AVI and MPG files. I have tried four different PC's with same results (XP and WIN2k). I thought this was the best tray player around - but still bugs that need to be worked out. I emailed these findings to the developer with no response and with the release of 1.01b I see these bugs have not been fixed. Keep searching if you want an all-in-one tray player that will handle a diverse array of codecs, audio and video

FreeCommander
  • Freeware
  • Win2000/XP/2003/Vista

qleft  Simple and fast  qright

FreeCommander version 2004.10b
  • Interface: 4
  • Features: 4
  • Ease of use: 4
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I have used other more costly programs and gotten a fraction of the features. This programs takes me back to the dual panel days of File Manager or the modern day PowerDesk software. I had no problem using the software right away and it is fast!!!! Drag and drop works great in every direction. It sees all my drives - network and otherwise. Top notch software. If only everything worked this well.
