My favorite startup manager
Startup Control Panel version 2.8
I have tried several different startup managers & prefer Startup Control Panel to the others tested at this time. Control of your startup programs is important for both performance & security reasons. The ability to add programs to startup is a simple & straight-forward process. While my philosophy is to keep startups to a minimum, this feature does add to the program's usefulness. The criticism regarding lack of info & edit features for system services seems unfair - the program's apparent function is to provide users info on optional changes that are not critical to Windows functionality & ease in adding or removing programs from the startup config without the need to access system areas unfamiliar to the less knowledgeable user. I recommend using a web site containing startup info/config advice - several sites are available & useful in determining what changes (if any) are needed.

Nice features with updates coming
Starter version 5.6.1.38
Starter is a nice combination startup manager & list of running processes which includes the associated dll files, etc. in another window. The only thing missing is an easy option to add a program to startup (a very minor point since additions are rarely made). The author has updated the product twice in one month (quick fixes) & appears to be plannning some major improvements. Keep on eye on this product.

Needs work
Startup Inspector version 2.2
Per the author's web site, the knowledge base for startup processes contains 4,687 processes as of the writing of this review. I searched the KB for a couple of common startup situations related to MS Office products & nVIDIA graphics but was unable to locate either one. I was especially disappointed in the MS Office omission (OSA.exe/OSA9.exe). This process is a "resource-hog" which provides little benefit as a startup process (needed for Office Shortcut Bar which most users can live without). A great idea that needs more development.

Excellent alternative for low-end pcs
StartupMonitor version 1.02
This is an excellent alternative for PCs with lower resources; especially combined with less knowledgeable users. I have a good friend who meets the above criteria & installed this utility with instructions to always answer no whenever the StartupMonitor window appears. An added measure of protection with simple instructions & low resource usage (235-250 kb). A very valuable tool for certain circumstances.

Must-have utility
HDD Thermometer version 1.2
Pros: Easy to configure & tailor settings suited for your PC, shutdown feature protects against damage to CPU, easy on resources (~240 kb memory), visual & audio warnings. Recommend config as startup. Con: Difficult to configure for multiple profiles. Summary: Would include in any top ten freeware utility - peace of mind for this user who experienced a fan failure. I especially recommend this utility for all notebook users.
