Freeware-shareware, who cares? this is great!
MediaMonkey version 2.5.4
Don't be distracted by comments bemoaning this not being pristine freeware. This is a great program that has met all of my needs and pointed out needs of which I wasn't yet aware. I have music files given to me from a friend formated in FLAC. I wasn't able to listen to them until I started using MediaMonkey. Now I can not only listen to them but MM easily converted them to MP3 so I can listen to them on my portable listening devices. Besides this, the program rips CD's and Manages the music on my older iRiver player. I was ready to throw it out but now can use it as easily as the iPod. MM can manage the iPod as well, but I have a lot of music bought from iTunes. When I figure out how to carry that over, I will exclusively use MediaMonkey. Then there is the Last.fm add on..

The zen of screen grabbers
Cropper version 1.8
Don't let the absolute simplicity of use fool you. This program is perfect for every screen copy I have had to make. It takes about 45 seconds to learn and works all the time. Who can top that? If you just use it to copy on screen information into emails, it's worth the effort.

Have time to spare before you start.
Google Earth version 3.0.0395 beta
As a person who loves maps and going places, Google Maps is wonderful. The installation was faultless, and the interface is practically spiritual. I went to the small town where I was born on the Atlantic Seaboard and zoomed in on the house where we lived. I could see the milk truck behind the high fence. This program has layer upon layer. Go to San Francisco and click on the Churches box. I didnt know there were that many churches in town. Need a pharmacy or gas station? This will not only show you where they are but what they look like. Can you tell I played with this one for a while? Thats why I say, have a lot of spare time before you install this.

This needs a lot of work
Angel Writer version 3.0
I am still searching for the perfect text editor. Each of the ones offered has perhaps one or two good points which may meet a particular need. Angel Writer presents itself well, but loses me on several counts. Though it says it saves in HTML, when you try to open an HTML file it only offers you .rtf and .txt files to open. You can write out the file name, but this is no help if youre using the open feature to find a file. I also saved a test .html file and then tried to open it and found a blank page. Another poor feature is it doesnt open files dropped into its interface. All in all I would say this is project that needs a lot of work to be worthy of consideration.

This is good but there is better
As-U-Type Speller version 3.1
In a desperate search of spell checkers to assist in the overwhelming amount of typing associated with managing several blogs, I tested every spellchecker I could find here, in Google and the other software portals. As-U-Type Speller came in a close second to my final choice, ...

Without the best equipment, not worth the tim
Skype version 1.2.0.48
I have tried Skype using the standard laptop microphone and speaker with poor results. The conversations were broken up and the other party could only hear bits of what I was trying to say. I tried it on another laptop with a combined bluetooth mike and earpiece. It was better, but I wouldn't invest any money in this. I will try it from time to time to see if the connection improves. Right now it's up there with hand cranked box phones from the turn of the last century.

Gimp is not for the weak of heart
The GIMP version 2.05
There is a review farther down in this list that requests GIMP be taken off this list. I can sympathize. The first two times I tried to get this program running, it crashed. I had all but given up on it until I read review after review touting it as one of twenty or so "must have" programs for bloggers. Determined to discover the cause of this praise, I buckled down on the FM and found the glitch in the set-up for my computer. Now it's working like a charm, is much easier to understand than that other Adobe program and is free. When I say it is not for the weak of heart, I mean not for the wimps who think any software that doesn't do all the work during installation is worth their trouble. I feel this one is.

It does what is says it does, and more
Advanced Diary version 1.1
I was looking for something to keep notes of day-to- day events that would transfer content, cut and paste, to the w::bloggar blog composition interface. This is exactly what Advanced Diary did for me. The only problem I had with it was the lack of dictionary. The good news is there is a good working dictionary on w::bloggar.

Alien interface word processor
Jarte version 1.04
Being totally adapted to the common MS Windows interface, Jarte's is a bit numbing. It reminds me of the old DOS days when every program, in an attempt to be unique, tried to present a proprietary interface. Unfortunately this adds to the learning curve. This review was written using the Jarte WP. Clicking the small label icon in the middle top, will add written labels to help ease the learning curve. The Spell checker worked fine for me. I checked the added features in the Plus version and found none for which I would shell out...

At last, a picture editor written just for me
PhotoFiltre version 6.0.2
FxFoto does well enough as a photo fixer. PhotoFiltre, especially when the freely available plug-ins are installed, is just under a million times better. It doesn't assume you are a dummy, but has a easily understood interface. It also is very free without the annoyware reminders all over FxFoto.

Once set up, thingamablog works like a dream.
Thingamablog version 1.0b2
There was a bit of learning curve, not supported by the help file, in the set up. If you are not used to installing Java files on your PC, that too my cause you a moment's hesitation to use this wonderful, and so far free, application. Once it is set up, it is almost as simple as w::Blogger. The newsreader seems simple and useful, but I am only interested in the publishing side of it for now.

W:bloggar does the job
w.bloggar version 3.02
When you make quick spontaneous additions to your blog, nothing seems to work better then w:bloggar. I have tried the more complicated commercial products. Compared to w:bloggar, they are all bloated. The author's website gives you all the help you need, with a working blog for comments and quick feedback.

Why pay? because it works!!!
Opera version 7.5
When Opera came out in its 3.* version, in Windows 98, over a 56K phone modem, I gave it a try and found it to be a bit clunky and "foreign." When the announcement for the final 7.5 out of beta came around, I thought, why not give it another try. I have been bouncing from Mozilla to IE clones, never finding one that was perfect. I have found it. Since loading it I have not turned it off. It's email, Usenet and RSS readers have a learning curve, but once understood, make so much sense. F11 not only gives you full screen, but becomes a commercial quality display program I plan to use at meetings. With only 384 characters left, there isn't enough room to fully review this program. Go to the opera.com website and operajournal.com to get a fuller understanding of its full potential. Before they start playing the get off the stage music, I just want to mention the ease of Blog creation there as well.

Notesbrowser similar to Yeah Write!
Notesbrowser
This is very similar to Yeah Write! The file downloaded from Webattack wouldn t install. I went to the author s site and downloaded the 2/22/04 version. It works very smoothly with a very low learning curve.

Support is great!
PocoMail
Finally an email program that has almost all of the features I could want! The customer service consists of personal emails from the program s writer. The forum supporting the product is highly active and informative.

Time saver
ePrompter
It s simple and free. A glance at the screen saver tell where and how much email I have in Outlook and online mail accounts. It certainly saves going online to check. The simple utility to erase the mail at the server has also saved me Spam cluster headaches later on. I don t plan to delete it any time soon from XP.

I ve deleted all others
Yahoo Music Jukebox
This is the software that came with my Treo MP3 player. I was surprised to find an earlier version on MyWebAttack. It didn t take long to register it to use all the features. The burn option works without a hitch. It loads playlists on the MP3 player with no added configurations.

Kitchen Sink system tool
System Mechanic
My system was unaccountably locking up. I tried Norton, I tried OnTrack. Neither could find the problem. I ran System Mechanic as last resort. It checked my registry and carefully explained the problem. My only grief with it has been the Auto Update feature locking the system requiring a cold boot to get around.
