Yahoo! Messenger
  • Freeware
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP

qleft  A couple of bad points, but it's freeware!  qright

Yahoo! Messenger version 7.5
  • Interface: 4
  • Features: 4
  • Ease of use: 2
  • Value: 4
  • Overall: 4

Yes it's slightly bloated and leaves a fairly big footprint (for 7 years or older PCs that is). But I think it's great for a free IM, just the LAUNCHcast plugin alone is worth the DL to me, it works great. Just make sure to do a custom install and stop it from installing all of the crap it tries to piggyback with it.

PhotoFiltre
  • Freeware
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP/Vista

qleft  Better than photoshop?  qright

PhotoFiltre version 6.0.2
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 4
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

O.K. Let's be realistic. PhotoFiltre is better than Adobe Photoshop? That's ridiculous but you can't really compare them anyway. I mean $700.00 to $0.00 is a hell of a price range to compare products in. I use Photoshop at work and school but at home I use PhotoFiltre and it's great. I downloaded GIMP but just getting through the installation readme was a hassle so I haven't even unzipped it yet and probably won't. I can't imagine any other free app being capable of more than PhotoFiltre is. The only thing that really hangs me up from time to time is the absence of layers, but if it means saving a buttload of cash I can deal with it. Oh, and a lot of the plug-ins and support docs are only in French. That kind of sucks but now I'm just being picky. PhotoFiltre is better than any cheap, free or bundled-with-hardware applications I've used and I'd definitely recommend it to the casual user. (Or really poor professional. :)

Notepad2
  • Freeware
  • WinWin (All)

qleft  I'm just waiting for xpnoteproeditpadlite  qright

Notepad2 version 1.0.12
  • Interface: 4
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 3
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 4

Yeah, these Notepad replacements are a dime a dozen and it's gotten pretty hard to distinguish one from another. But I think NotePad2 is one of the two or three that manage to nudge themselves just ahead of the heap. The program is small and stable(although, unlike Metapad, it requires an install), it has a crapload of options including the must-haves like transparent mode and an Always on Top option (no tabbed files like NoteTab though). The types of files NotePad2 handles and the fact that they're all in their own, relevant style is cool but customizing these options is much harder than it needs to be. All in all; Notepad2 doesn't really excel at much of anything but it doesn't drop the ball on anything either making it a good, solid, text editor that will remain as one of the two or three on my hard drive. (I hope I reviewed the right one though).

Mozilla Firefox
  • Freeware
  • Win2000/XP/2003/Vista

qleft  People are still using internet explorer?!  qright

Mozilla Firefox version 0.92
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 3
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I don't see how there's even any debate as to which browser is the best. Firefox is full of features, fully customizable, more secure, and FREE! And if you're worried about instability, be careful with extensions. Firefox itself is fine as far as I can tell, and getting better with every update. Besides, Microsoft comes out with a security update almost hourly so you're better off with Mozilla anyway. Back it up and deal with it!

Metapad
  • Freeware
  • WinWin (All)

qleft  Good notepad replacement  qright

Metapad version 3.5
  • Interface: 3
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 3
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 4

"Transparent Mode" is priceless. Metapad is a good replacement for Notepad; Options like dual fonts and "Accelerator Keys" make it better but Transparent Mode really seals the deal for me. I constantly use it for taking shorthand notes. I only wish they would make the taskbar customizable.
