Revo Uninstaller

Revo Uninstaller version 1.50
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I had a major problem uninstalling Adobe Reader. The program's unistaller was non-functional and gave an error. I ran Revo and it cleaned up enough garbage that I was able to install Adobe Reader. It isn't like another program that I tried that eventually tells you that you have to pay to fix the problem.Revo is Free, effective, and clean.

Mozilla Firefox

qleft  Firefox is a browser to have.  qright

Mozilla Firefox version 2.0.0.4

  • Overall: 4

Firefox is another alternative to IE. I haven't found it to be as fast as Opera. But it's not slow either. There is a speed tweak that sometimes improves surfing speed. There are some excellent themes and add-ons for this open-source browser. It has multi-tabbing and is customisable. Firefox is definitely better than Internet Explorer or any of the IE knock-offs. Security is updated when needed. Firefox is a dependable browser and I recommend it.

Opera
  • Freeware
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP/Vista

qleft  Opera a great choice.  qright

Opera version 9.2
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I had Opera before it was free. Bought two licenses on a two-for-one deal. It was great then and even greater now that it is free. Opera is a safe, actively developed browser. It is fast and customisable. I have found that over the years Opera has improved their page rendering on web sites. I don't see that problem much any more where I surf. There are lots of decorative themes for a variety of personal tastes. Multiple tabs are still a main stay with Opera. It's my favorite web browser and has served me well for 4+ years.

Comodo Firewall
  • Freeware
  • Win2000/XP

qleft  The best free firewall.  qright

Comodo Firewall version 2.4
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 4
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

Comodo Firewall Pro is the best firewall that I have found so far. It has earned a "stealth" rating at Shields Up and has been easy to use. It has an Application Monitor,Network Monitor,Component Monitor, and Application Behavior Analysis. The early versions of Comodo were heavy on resource usage. Comodo listened to the complaints and made subsequent upgrades lighter on resources.Very responsive developers for freeware! This is version 2.4.18.184.This firewall has always been rock solid with no conflicts of any kind. Version 3.0 is in beta and sounds promising too. I have tried LookNStop,Kerio,Bit Defender,Sygate,Zone Alarm,Filsec, and a few others and I would take Comodo over any of them!

avast! Home Edition

avast! Home Edition version 4.7.1001
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I switched to Avast and I have been recommended it to family and friends that are looking for an easy, dependable antivirus. Updates are reliable and regular. The really impressive part is the available components. Standard shield(monitor)Web shield,Network shield and E-mail scanner are the components I use in addition to the scanner. The configuration options are very good. I was surprised to see that the Internet Mail and Outlook mail scanners have heuristics. The updates are automatic, but that's another feature that each individual can configure also. Avast Home is packed with components and features, especially for a free program.

WinPatrol
  • Freeware
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista

qleft  A superb monitoring tool.  qright

WinPatrol version Build 3
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I used the free version and bought the Plus version after liking what I saw in the free version. The biggest incentives for my going that route were; the access to file information and real-time monitoring feature. The support is top-notch also! Win Patrol has caught exploits while I was browsing sites that should have been clean.

With every new version this free scanner gets better. This program is actively developed and it's one of the free scanners that I wouldn't part with! There are 3 different scans;Custom,Complete, and Quick scans. This program updates regularly and is very configurable.

This program is updated regularly.Version 3.0 is yet another improvement! It has only a scanner in the free version, but that scanner has 4 different types from smart to full system scan. I haven't had a single false positive. An excellent free program!

R-Firewall version 1.0 build 53
  • Interface: 3

This is a fine software firewall except for one thing. It does not get a stealth rating at Shields Up firewall scan site.It shows a high majority of ports as "closed" thereby visible.

ZeroSpyware 2005
  • Free Trial ($29.95)
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP

qleft  An excellent antispyware program.  qright

ZeroSpyware 2005 version 3.2
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

Zero Spyware 2005 has been a surprise for me. It's a comprehensive antispyware program. It has a very good scanner but the prevention and real-time protection components are the best that I have seen. It's easy to use.The control panel is easy to navigate and this program is very configurable. Best of all,the support via e-mail or live chat are top-notch!! Another plus is the light resource usage.Zero Spyware doesn't slow/drag my computer down. The 15 day trial is fully functional,so while that isn't a lot of time, you get to see and use all of the features.

SpywareBlaster
  • Freeware
  • WinWin (All)

qleft  The 1st program that you should install.  qright

SpywareBlaster version 3.3
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

Spyware Blaster should be the first anti-spyware program that you install! Spyware is a rising threat and this program does something a scanner can't do.It prevents spyware that is listed in their database from installing! It's extremely easy to use and doesn't run as a resident service. Install it,update it, and "enable all protection".It has protections for IE and Firefox. It works,it's free(donations to the developer are accepted),and the developer(javacool)is one of the best! This program is a key weapon in the battle against spyware!

Sygate Personal Firewall

qleft  Sygate is the best of the free.  qright

Sygate Personal Firewall version 5.6
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I recently switched back to Sygate and I appreciate the ease of use of this firewall. I got "stealth" at port probe sites with the default settings. No tweaking needed. The alerts and logs are a very nice feature.Stability is not an issue with version 5.5.However the latest version(5.6) would not install correctly! Sygate 5.5 is a great program! The only "con" is resource usage. It uses 28460k for peak memory on our XP computer.

UnHackMe
  • Free Trial ($19.95)
  • WinNT/2000/XP

UnHackMe version 2.0
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 4
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I trialed UnHackMe 2.0 and it found nothing on my computer. That was what I expected. The program ran with very low resource usage on my computer. That's great when you consider that I used the default setup which scans your pc every minute! Installation was easy and you have the option of having the UnHackMe monitor startup when you start your computer. You can scan on demand using the tray icon or desktop icon. This is really a small, easy program to use. Greatis has good support and a forum.

If you are looking for a freeware image editor PhotoFiltre is excellent!I read a lot of reviews here and decided to try this program first.I'm glad that I did!Anybody can figure out how to use this program with a little trial and error. You can easily undo changes. There are so many things you can do with an image using this program. There are help files with the program, but I didn't really need them with the way PhotoFiltre is setup. PhotoFiltre is a "keeper".

Avira AntiVir Personal

Avira AntiVir Personal version 6.29.00.03
  • Interface: 4
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

AntiVir PE is the free av program that I installed on a friends older,resource-limited computer. It was a replacement for Norton 2004 antivirus. It installed easily and I was surprised that it was already up to date for updates.AntiVir PE has a memory scanner. The Guard didn't slow the pc down.It runs light! It found 4 malware(a dialer and 3 trojans) during the initial scan and deleted them successfully. The scanner can unpack files. The interface isn't fancy, but it doesn't need to be to do the job. This av is one that is very easy to use for anyone.I can't compare it to Avast but I had AVG before and I prefer AntiVir PE over AVG.

Filseclab Personal Firewall version 2.5
  • Interface: 2
  • Features: 2
  • Ease of use: 2
  • Value: 2
  • Overall: 2

Filseclabs firewall does some things well. It didn't bog down my computer. For a fairly new firewall it is stable. It wasn't real easy for me to figure out the rules. There isn't much info on connections and I got an * instead of application names on many connections making it hard to figure out what was attempting a connection. I went back to Kerio 2.1.5 and I found that firewall more informational(regarding applications and connections) and easier to configure.

WinOverBoost

qleft  Winoverboost worth a try.  qright

WinOverBoost version 2.1.1 beta
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

WinOverBoost is a nice freeware package. This program is clean,no spyware in it! It's easy to use and has a restore feature to undo changes. The memory and swapfile monitor is clear and well designed.Memory defrag works well. Internet Accelerator is automatic. You don't need to do anything other than click "apply" or "restore". There are neon green "active" buttons that tell you what is activated. System Boost is a registry related tweak. I have had no ill-effects from the use of WinOverBoost. I recommend you try it.For a free program this program has a lot included in it.

Index.dat Suite version 2.6.0
  • Interface: 5

Index.dat Suite cleans your index.dat files on reboot. It works for me with no ill effects. It finds your index.dat files quickly. With this program I can view what's in those files. It's the best program that I have tried (freeware or shareware) for exploring index.dat files and cleaning them. It's free, very informative, and stable. I wish there were help files included. It's a good idea to go to the program's home page and study the description. This program is one that I am going to keep.

The Cleaner Professional
  • Free Trial ($49.95)
  • Win2000/XP/2003/Vista

qleft  The cleaner professional.  qright

The Cleaner Professional version 4.1
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

The Cleaner Professional is my favorite security program. I wanted an A/T program that has some type of monitoring component(s)in addition to a trojan scanner. This program has that with TCActive monitoring running processes and TCMonitor watching the registry. They run "light" according to my task manager. The scanner is excellent! You can easily configure it to scan hidden executables and/or some types of archive files. It is easy to set up for updates which are generally available daily. An informative, convenient feature is the trojan list which is accessed via a tab in the scanner console. You can access the online trojan database also. I have found that the support forum is active and helpful. This program stays current with it's updates and is easy to use.It also has a Stealth Mode which is easily activated/deactivated.There are a lot of A/T programs available for trial. The Cleaner Professional should be on the short list for a test drive.

Ace Utilities
  • Free Trial ($29.00)

qleft  Why try ace utilities?  qright

Ace Utilities version 2.4
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I registered Ace Utilities a year and a half ago. Some of the reasons why I like Ace Utilities are:The registry cleaner has a backup.I have never needed it though. You can send junk files to the recycle bin instead of deleting them immediately.Ace is easy to use and has some great utilities. The Uninstall Manager works very well. The Autostart Manager is effective in controlling what programs can start at bootup. There are currently 112 plugins that can be used by clicking the "cleanup" tab erase your history".Support is very good! The most important issues for me are versatility and dependability. Ace Utilities has been a valued and trusted program on my pc since day 1.
