Another Comodo winner
Comodo Verification Engine version 2.2.05
Current versions no longer need registration. It verifies registered sites, so it doesn't know about the rest. BUT your bank will be registered, and so are most big retailers, etc. Simple and obvious visual clue when a site is "genuine", so you check up on the others! Adds confidence when dealing with personal details, money, etc. And it's free, and from COMODO who specialize in online security (I use their excellent free firewall too). Nothing to lose and everything to gain by installing this.

If you like p2p you must have it
PeerGuardian 2 version 2.0 Beta 6b
Installs easily, updates automatically from information provided by a dedicated well-informed P2P community. Helps you avoid deliberately "faked" files, and "spy" sites which might try to exploit you. Works whatever P2P network you use, and doesn't seem to affect download performance or use much resource.

Complete, proven, fast, free
Eraser version 5.7
Best of the lot. Not only can you erase a file directly from right-click, you can erase the recycle bin the same way if you "forgot". Best of all, you can wipe all free space (including the unused bits of re-allocated clusters) if you think you might have left some confidential files un-erased. Tried this app because of other comments, thanks guys, no regrets!

Maybe the best freebie
Comodo Internet Security version 2.4
Needs patience while it "learns", but protection is excellent even using default settings. If you know what you're doing you can avoid the "learning" cycle, but the "help" could be better. Enough flexibility for professional use, works on servers as well as workstations, and supports multiple NIC's: most don't. Benchmarking I can't detect any noticeable performance hit on connections, and CPU usage is negligible. Amazingly comprehensive for freeware. So far no crashes...

Worth having if you're `green`
Shutter version 2.85
Lets me leave stuff running and go to bed, knowing it will close down reliably. Saves power and money.
Review date: Jun 11, 2007
Not exactly!
LastChance version 1.03
On XP SP2 it always just logs me off, not shut down. What a pity, otherwise it would be exactly what I want.

Can't do without it!
Motherboard Monitor version 5.3.7.0
Many monitoring features, temperature of CPU always, plus if your hardware supports them also board, power supply, disk drive temps. And a CPU usage meter. All these can display as icons in the systray: no intrusion: I LOVE THIS!!! Nice to see how cool your CPU when idle, and how hot when 100% busy. Also can monitor fan speeds and power voltages. Can set warning limits and optionally force shutdown on any of the above! Only problem: no longer maintained, so might not correctly detect some newer motherboards. But if you experiment, you can still get it to find the correct sensor settings. GIVE IT A TRY, it might save you money, it also might avoid a FIRE if a fan should fail: this happened to a friend of mine...

Thanks for this great free tool
Attachment Enabler for Outlook version 1.0.0.0
Solves a Microsoft problem, gives you the choice which attachments you allow. Change your mind as often as you like. Great when a trusted friend wants to mail you a program, you can permit EXE attachments, extract the one you want, then disable again. Take care not to leave dangerous types enabled unless you really know what you are doing.

Simple, free and does what it says.
EfreeSoft Boss Key version 3.30
Title says it all.
Review date: May 04, 2006
Probably the best and genuinely free.
EMS Free Surfer Companion version 1.3.0.0
Easy to configure to suit your preference. I use the NATURAL setting which blocks what I don't want but permits some "needed" popups. Gets it right most of the time, the STRICT setting stops everything. The floating ad blocker is great. XP's blockers are not so good, and some commercial ones I tried are harder to configure.

Be safe - get this now!
Sandboxie version 2.11
Complete browsing safety for FREE, register for some extra features you can live without. After closing, all temp files, downloads, cookies, plugins, ActiveX controls, toolbar changes, spyware and even viruses are totally gone, all registry changes are also removed. This is as safe as you can get! You can manually choose downloads and favorites etc you really want to keep. Recent versions are completely stable on XP and 2003 for me. Does check on startup for new versions. Don't leave "home" without it!

What a great idea!
KatMouse version 1.01
Makes browsing much easier and more intuitive, especially if you have several visible windows or frames at once. I didn't like the "wheel-button" option, but you can configure that or turn it off (I have). Works for Explorer, IE, Netscape, Outlook, Word, Adobe etc without any fuss, and doesn't interfere with my intellimouse driver settings either. And it's free...

Great free tool.
Mmm Free version 2.02
Excellent tool, no problems on XP. Does connect to internet, it checks for updates (you can disable this), no spyware! Does exactly what it says, only works on Explorer menus. Need to spend $10 to get mmm+ version for browsers, Outlook etc. I'm considering it...

Free, simple, life-saver!
Icon Restore version 1.0
Every time I update my nVidia driver I lose the Icon layout: no problem now!
Review date: Nov 04, 2004
Amazing and genuinely free!
WinHTTrack version 3.32
Used on XP and 2000 without problems for over a year, just got the latest version, thought it was time I reviewed it! Really easy to install, config and use. Great for personal and professional use, I use it a lot to get full documentation (eg: XML and Java specs) from official websites. Also good to get fun stuff from music and film sites, etc, you can get "the lot" in one go. Does everything I can think of!

It works! easy, and free!
MP3Gain version 1.23
Very easy, the help is good anyway. Great for equalizing track volumes you may want in a playlist, even better if you plan to burn them to CD, which is my main use. Takes a while, but much easier than any other method. VERY important, it doesn't lose ANY sound quality, so you can change levels as many times as you like until you're happy. Anyway, I'm happy!

Excellent free downloader + http parser.
LeechGet 2007 version 1.1
Tried almost all the others, this latest version 2004 1.1 is my choice now: combines more features than other freebies. Simple to install/configure/use, integrates with Explorer (others with plugins). Handles FTP properly, even with proxies. Also includes a parser which lets you get ALL the downloads, images, mpegs (etc) you want from a web page in one go. Very smart, the free version limit (8 simultaneous downloads) is no problem for me. And no spyware/adware!

Incredible! does the lot, and it's free!
Audacity version 1.2.0
I read the other reviews (thanks guys) and tried it. Used it for capturing and upgrading my precious vinyl onto CD, cleaning up sound etc. Also, improving video soundtracks before burning to DVD. Replaces several other good tools with just one, and there's still a bunch of interesting FREE plugins I haven't tried yet.

Simple, handy, free!
Remote Disconnection Utility version 1.1
Does what it says. Used for 2 years with 56k modem, 128k ISDN and 1m ADSL. Works for all, with ICS (connection sharing) and proxies.
Review date: Aug 11, 2004
Powerful, easy to use.
Attribute Changer version 5.23
Not something you need often, but it's there on the right-click explorer menu when you need it. Easy to remove the "read-only" setting of all files copied from CD since it will recurse folders. Similar with changing file and folder dates, etc.

Good free disk benchmark
HD Speed version 1.4.0.42
Doesn't need installing, easy to use, informative.
Review date: Jul 30, 2004
Easy, useful, free
TreeSize version 1.72
Much more informative than Windows "properties", lets you see where your disk space is being used. It's genuinely free (no nags), and I haven't felt the need to upgrade to the Pro version, this tells me all I need to know.

Windows services and devices made easy.
pserv.cpl version 2.3
The Windows Services option on the control panel, does some of the same things. But pserv.cpl gives much more information, lets you manage the state of services, AND lets you remove or create them yourself. It also lets you do exactly the same with "devices", which are even harder to find out about and control in Windows. A must-have for more expert users.

Easy, safe, useful
Starter version 5.6.1.38
Shows ALL the auto-startup programs, and tells you where they are started. Lets you disable (and re-enable) dubious progs, so you can use trial-and-error if you're not sure, then you can permanently remove them. You can easily add your own if you want. Also shows you running tasks, with much more info than MS task manager, and lets you kill them if you're sure you know what you're doing!

Good tweaker
Fresh UI version 7.15
Very similar to X-teq, but updated more often. No spam/spyware/adware, registration is free: they use your email only to notify you of updates. No problems, just benefits.
Review date: Jul 27, 2004
Simple and useful
Note-It version 2.5.0.4
Great way to make permanent or temporary notes. And it's free.
Review date: Jul 26, 2004
Why isn't this standard in windows?!!!
CopyToXP version 1.2
The title says it all! Very handy.
Review date: Jul 26, 2004
Simple, fast, flexible and free!
Karen`s Replicator version 2.2.3
This does everything I need. Only restriction is it won't compress the backup. That's fine with me, it's quicker and makes it easier to find backed-up files. You can set it to only copy changed files, a great time-saver. The scheduler is good, and can remind you if you missed a backup when not powered up. It's also happy with backing up to network shares and mapped drives: many other good backup progs have problems with these. Try this one first, if it does exactly what you want you don't need anything more complicated!

Every home should have one
WinPatrol version 7.0.1.0
Great all round watchdog, replaces several other tools I used before. Advises of new (possibly malicious) startup progs. Shows and auto-manages cookies. Shows active tasks, scheduled tasks and services. Also shows "IE Helpers" which may include spyware etc. Lets you keep or delete any of the above too. WOW! or maybe WUFF...

Best registry backup/recover.
ERUNT version 1.1.d
Easy to use, always works, and the backed-up files go where you can find them. Most important, you can restore a registry without having to boot the OS you saved it from, because the backup knows which registry it came from. A DOS boot, Recovery Console, or Windows boot from another partition, floppy or CD will let you restore a broken registry. It's already saved me some serious pain!

Little beauty!
bxAutoZip for Outlook version 1.11
Is so simple to install and use, actually you never need to do anything ever again, it "just works". It's free, I use the Outlook version of bxAutoZip (with Outlook 2000), there's also a version for Outlook Express. Why wouldn't you want it?
Review date: Jul 24, 2004
Simply the best
RoboForm version 5.7.4
So easy, it just does what you hope it will! Tried several others, but this beats all hands-down, even with the "free version" limits. I've now disabled Norton Password Manager, etc. Wish I'd found it sooner.
Review date: Jul 24, 2004
Why pay money?
FileZilla version 2.2.4f
I now use this exclusively in preference to a couple of commercial progs I have: it's very functional and easy to use, fast and reliable. And it's genuinely free: no shareware restrictions. Since it's an "open source" project, you can get the code if you really want!
Review date: Jul 24, 2004
Good all rounder
Proxy+ version 3.0.232
Very easy to install and get working for simple proxy tasks (I use HTTP, FTP, SOCKS). Email support is powerful, but requires more thought. I chose to use the "mapped links" feature instead for routing my email as I have accounts on 4 different ISPs: it seemed simpler, and works great. So it's genuinely proxying my SMTP and POP3 traffic! I haven't seen this exact feature on another free proxy. I've also used this feature to set up VPN links to external sites. The interface uses your web browser, not as neat as a Windows GUI, but quite easy to follow. Built-in help is very good. I've used this for over a year without problems (I have a 3 PC LAN), after trying several proxies. In my opinion, it's the best among a bunch of excellent freeware proxies!
