ImageMatics StillMotion PE
  • Free Trial ($49.95)

qleft  Not impressed  qright

ImageMatics StillMotion PE version 1858
  • Interface: 2
  • Features: 2
  • Ease of use: 3
  • Value: 1

The program seemed a bit "Flinstone-like" and the transition options leave much to be desired. The panning is not what you expect at all - very disappointing. In general not too much flexibility. I'm surprised it got such high ratings by Snapfiles. All in all, it will do what it says, but don't expect anything cool or fancy from it.

IE Privacy Keeper

qleft  Excellent - no doubt about it  qright

IE Privacy Keeper version 2.7
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I can't believe it's freeware. Works flawlessly, has a lot of options to customize and have it do only the things you want it to do. I love it and consider it a must-have. Another option for people on-the-go, is to download the "take along" version from the developers site. Use the take-along when you use a computer that is not your own and want to erase your tracks - for example at an internet cafe. The developer writes: "The TakeAlong version is a standalone executable that does not require installation or the presence of any auxiliary files. It will not write anything to the registry on the machine where it is executed. You can take it along on a diskette, CD or a USB Drive."

EMS Free Surfer Companion
  • Freeware
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP

qleft  My favorite pop-up blocker  qright

EMS Free Surfer Companion version 1.3.0.0
  • Interface: 4
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

Straight to the point - it does what it's supposed to and it does it well. Handy configurations to adjust settings to your liking. Has extra very practical features although I mainly use it to simply block all those pop-ups. I never see it, but know it's working in the background. I honestly get ZERO pop-ups (I use the "strict" mode setting).

Calendarscope
  • Free Trial ($39.95)
  • WinWin (All)

qleft  True top-notch calendar program  qright

Calendarscope version 2.2
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I love this program. I tried many other ones before and none of them compare to Calendarscope. It truly does have everything you would need (from using the program, to printing, to saving as an html file etc.). You can customize just about every aspect of it - including interface, view options and functionality aspects. There is so much good to be said about this program, that I can't write it all here. I HIGHLY recommend you download the trial and check it out for yourself. I must say that the help file needs to be a bit more thorough. However, their customer support is great. I have emailed them questions and each time I have gotten a friendly response within less than 24 hours with each question clearly answered. The 30 dollars are definitely well worth it. I use the program a lot and have never once regretted buying it. Honestly, look no further..... try this one out.

Adobe Photoshop

qleft  Top for pros, not meant for the average joe  qright

Adobe Photoshop
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 2
  • Value: 2
  • Overall: 4

No question, this is the Porsche, Rolls Royce, Jaguar, Mercedes etc... of photo editing. You can do just about anything with it. The features are one of a class and the new versions just keep getting better and better. However, for the average homeuser, this is WAY too complicated. In that case get Adobe Photoshop Elements - highly recommended. One the other hand, if you are ambitious and want to learn more about photo editing (and have an extra 700 bucks to spend) then get Adobe Photoshop CS 8.0, buy yourself a good tutorial book for version 8.0 (for at least 50 dollars) and start learning. You'll be amazed at how much you can learn. You can become a "pro" in your circle of homeusers and improve photos in a way that will amaze you. There are also free online tips and tutorials... Like everything, it will take time and practice to feel comfortable with it and be good at it.

Firefly Internet Phone version 1.9.5

I have been using it for over a year and have had no problems. The sound quality is very good (not perfect) with occasional fade outs or distortions. I have used it for long conversations (1.5 hours) and was satisfied with it. You can send text messages back and forth. I wish you could also send files with it like in MSN messenger.

Dexpot

  • Win98/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista

qleft  Great program  qright

Dexpot version 1.3
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I had been using the Virtual Desktop from the windows xp powertoys and it kept deleting my background pictures. It seemed unstable and became a hassle to work with. Now that I found Dexpot, I am sticking with it. It has many nice features - a thousand times better than xp powertoy. Very handy to use if you have a lot of windows open from different programs. You can also move or copy windows from one desktop to another very easily. Customize your desktop individually - including naming it, choosing background and screensaver or apply settings to all desktops at once. Very nice program with many features, practical to use, nicely put together in a clear and easy-to-use interface. Set your own hotkeys or use the mouse. I have set 4 desktops: one for general stuff, one for graphic editing, one for internet surfing, and one for multimedia things. I can have many windows open at once without having everything be so cluttered.

FastStone Image Viewer
  • Freeware
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista

qleft  Awesome - all you need in a picture viewer  qright

FastStone Image Viewer version 1.7
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 4
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

As a picture viewer, this program is awesome! I like the slideshow option with adjustable time-between-pictures setting (quickly replaced the now useless Windows XP "view as slideshow" option). I love the quick access to things by moving the mouse to the end of the screen. Excellent!! Superb!! The red-eye reduction is not as great as I had hoped, but this program is mainly for picture viewing anyway. Nice clear zoom ability. I really like the use of the mouse wheel as click to toggle views. I have tried ACDsee, Irfanview and others, but this program by far outbeats the rest and leaves them in the dust. I use Picasa to organize my photos and FastStone Viewer to view them. Wonderful combination of Freeware. Thank you guys for writing this program.

Picasa
  • Freeware
  • WinXP/Vista

qleft  Great program  qright

Picasa version 1.618 build 536
  • Interface: 4
  • Features: 3
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I use Picasa to keep my photos organized. For that, it is perfect. I never go to My Pictures folder anymore. Considering that this program is now free, it really is a must for the average person who wants to keep their pictures and videos organized and in a very easy-to-view manner. The photo-editing features are absolutely worthless, but that's not what the program was made for. All in all, this has become my #1 picture-organizing program.

FinePrint
  • Free Trial ($49.95)
  • Win2000/XP/2003/Vista

qleft  Very good - very handy  qright

FinePrint version 5.07
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

Great program. Very handy to have and save yourself a lot of paper when printing. Has the option to print as a booklet, set margin size, insert watermarks/headers/footers/page numbers, leave room for hole-punching on either long or short side of paper. Delete individual pages, print individual sheets or the entire print job, combine a bunch of documents to print into one single print project that can be saved and in which the individual print jobs can be deleted and undeleted. Although many printers out there give you the ability to print several pages on one sheet or print as a booklet, you cannot compare them to the features that this program provides. Download it. The free trial is fully functional forever, but will insert the line "printed using Fineprint Software" at the bottom of every page.

SnagIt
  • Free Trial ($49.95)
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP/Vista

qleft  The best of the best among screen capturing  qright

SnagIt version 7.1.1
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

By far the best screen capture program. It will capture anything on your screen (text, pictures, video etc...). The settings for capturing give you a ton of options to be applied to the capture. Among these are zoom, color replacement, type of file to be saved as, automatically save the file with a given name and increasing numbers etc... You can also have it save a window with all of its contents even if scrolling is needed to view all contents. You can save different settings as profiles so that later on you can simply choose one of your profiles and bingo all the settings are there like you want them for that given task. I could go on and on about the numerous features. This is definitely worth downloading so you can see for yourself all that can be done with this program. If you are looking for screen capture, then I highly, highly recommended Snagit!

Free Internet TV
  • Free Trial ($19.95)
  • Win2000/XP/Vista

qleft  Not worth it at all  qright

Free Internet TV version 3.7
  • Interface: 3
  • Features: 1
  • Ease of use: 3
  • Value: 1
  • Overall: 2

The program size is small (1.6 MB) and although the interface is good and easy to use, the quality of image is terrible. I have a broadband connection and the image was still terrible and delayed. Audio was ok. Although they say there are 700 channels to watch, the vast (and I mean VAST) majority of them are not really worth watching, and those that might be worth watching, might not be broadcasting when you want to watch them. The trial is fully functional for 14 days and then you can pay 19.95 for one year or 29.95 forever. Try it for the fun of it if you want, but don't expect much at all, and I certainly would not pay money for it.
