Paper Valet
  • Free Trial ($24.95)
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP/2003

qleft  One of the few that just works  qright

Paper Valet version 2.1.09
  • Interface: 4
  • Features: 4
  • Ease of use: 4
  • Value: 5

I don't like the scan to PDF software that shipped with my scanner, so I've been looking for a replacement without much luck. I have an auto doc feeder, so I wanted something that would scan and save a multipage doc with one click. Paper Valet works. My only complaint is that is automatically saves the file for you using settings you specify (eg. date - account - invoice number - etc.) I'd like to be prompted to provide my own folder and file name. FYI - the unregistered version only saves files in TIFF format. You must register to get PDF functionality but for $25 who can complain?

Nico`s Photocopier
  • Freeware
  • WinWin (All)

qleft  Good ... but functionality too limited  qright

Nico`s Photocopier version 3.02
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 2
  • Ease of use: 3
  • Value: 3
  • Overall: 3

Great simple well designed interface, but the free version does not allow you to select your source scanner (if you have 2 or more) and does not allow you to select your destination printer (it auto prints to the default). Also multiple pages are sent to the printer as separate jobs, so if you are printing to a PDF printer, as I was, you end up with a PDF file for each page - not a single PDF doc with all pages - as desired. FYI - there is also a nagware screen that is displayed each time you close the application. If you are using this as a true photo copier (ie. paper to paper) it works well. If you are using it for anything PDF based, you may be disappointed.

Messer
  • Freeware
  • WinWin (All)

qleft  Basics are there, but lacking in some areas  qright

Messer version 0.992
  • Interface: 2
  • Features: 2
  • Ease of use: 1
  • Value: 4
  • Overall: 2

This app appears to be primarily focused on scheduled recordings and is not overly intuitive for one-click recording. Also MP3 recording is not native. You must configure it to use existing MP3 decoder dll files. Too much configuration for me. I did get the software installed and to record a wav file, but a 20 second recording was 1.2 MB. Too big for my application.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition version 7.1.394
  • Interface: 3
  • Features: 5

I have used this software on several computers for friends/family who are low-end users with minimal knowledge. The auto updates and scans work beautifully and are near-maintenance-free.

SpellBound
  • Freeware
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP

qleft  Once installed it works great  qright

SpellBound version 0.7.3
  • Interface: 4
  • Features: 4
  • Ease of use: 3
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 4

After resolving a few installation problems I got the software working and it is great. The trick to getting it installed is making sure you have FireFox 1.0 installed - no earlier and no later.

tinySpell
  • Freeware
  • Win2000/XP/Vista

qleft  Too simple  qright

tinySpell version 1.3
  • Interface: 2
  • Features: 1
  • Ease of use: 2
  • Value: 3
  • Overall: 2

This app only checks one word at a time and isn't very intuitive. Consider other applications if you are looking for anything more than the most basic functionality.

ieSpell
  • Freeware
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista

qleft  Ie spell checker  qright

ieSpell version 2.1.1.325
  • Interface: 4
  • Features: 4
  • Ease of use: 4
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 4

Great little spell checker that integrates with IE. I've been using this tool for severl weeks now and it has become invaluable. I spell check my webmail, my postings, etc. much more quickly. And the best part is that my custome dictionary is available regardless of what site I'm visiting. My only complaint is that the product doesn't work with FireFox.
