Excellent mindmapping tool
FreeMind version 0.8
I wasn't convinced of this MindMapping stuff in general. But now with the help of Freemind it is something I use quite often. People who are willing to try MindMapping should try it with Freemind. And make sure to look at the documentation (you'll find it in the Help menu). It shows the potential and some very good ease of use tips.

Awesome graphics editor
The GIMP version 2.05
Sure this program is not easy to learn, but it rewards you with a ton of useful features. My first impression was also 'Man what a stupid program'. But then I checked out all the online tutorials available in the Internet and took the time to learn it. And now it is my favorite graphic tool. (I'm writing about the Windows version, for Linux there is anyway no alternative available)

Janaserver highly recommended
Jana Server version 2.4.3
I'm using the JanaServer now a long time and it never failed. The proxy server works flawless and the email server does its job without hassle (supports POP3 and IMAP). Has a lots of features and an active community supporting it. Besides that add-ons for virus scanning and spam filtering are also available for free. Only the configuration is a little bit tricky. But this is mainly because of the many features the software has and that setting up a proxy or email server is in most cases not a job for the average user.
