TweakVI Basic
  • Freeware
  • WinWindows Vista

qleft  Good idea, but . . .  qright

TweakVI Basic version 1.0.1060
  • Interface: 3
  • Features: 3
  • Ease of use: 3
  • Value: 1
  • Overall: 2

I installed this on my new laptop which is running MS Vista and I was sorely disappointed. All the features which you really need are disabled. I uninstalled the program within the first half-hour of testing. "Well, what can you expect for free?" you might ask. "Lots," would be my response. I run mostly freeware on my desktop and laptop, and I have some programs which I would say outperform most commercial software. TweakVI Basic does not meet standard. They should have a commercial product only . . . not a "fake" free one.

Maxthon
  • Freeware
  • WinWin (All)

qleft  Good - but not the best  qright

Maxthon version 1.3.1.20
  • Interface: 3
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 4
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 4

On a positive note, Maxthon has many useful features and is ready to run right out of the box. I like it's ad blocking capabilities and its automatic sliding sidebar. It renders some pages correctly that Firefox cannot. I like using it for downloading Microsoft's security updates. However, it has many features I don't need. I prefer customizing from the ground up. I don't like the way the tabs work. It uses IE's engine, so shares the same vulnerabilities as IE. Even so, it still renders some pages incorrectly that IE renders correctly (e.g., my.yahoo.com). It is slower than IE or Firefox. Its interface is a bit more complicated and busy than Firefox's interface (although the features are excellent). The extensions are not as numerous or as well-designed as the extensions for Firefox. For security, speed, customizability (is that a word?), and simplicity of layout go with Firefox.

cam2pc - Freeware
  • Freeware
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista

qleft  Excellent  qright

cam2pc - Freeware version 4.5.2
  • Interface: 4
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 4
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I just bought a new computer and didn't even bother installing my canon software. Cam2pc is much more efficient, much less bloated, much simpler, and does a much better job. This program simply cannot be beat for the price (free).

Mozilla Firefox
  • Freeware
  • Win2000/XP/2003/Vista

qleft  Superior browser  qright

Mozilla Firefox version 1.0
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

Firefox is simplistic and easy to use. The interface is clean and attractive. The built-in google search bar is priceless. Cookie management is fair. With Adblock, a free extension, ad-blocking is a snap. It can block flash ads or any other type of ad. You can find some pre-made block lists in the user forums that will very accurately block ads without interfering with your normal browsing. The other extensions are amazing! Just don't install too many of them ... it can lead to stability problems. Try Forecastfox, which integrates some sweet weather tabs into the toolbar. Tabbed browsing is great. Security is unparalleled. Browsing is fast. The only drawback is the limited download options. This can easily be overcome by installing FlashGot, another sweet extension that allows integration with a number of third party download managers. It works very well with LeechGet, my personal favorite free download manager. I will never go back to IE.

AtStart Page
  • Freeware
  • WinWin (All)

qleft  Pretty nice little program  qright

AtStart Page version 3.11
  • Interface: 4
  • Features: 3
  • Ease of use: 4
  • Value: 3
  • Overall: 4

I like being able to set up my own start page, with only my own links, without having to put up with all the garbage ads and privacy issues associated with most portals. The interface is clean and simplistic, however, using Windows 98, the Favorites feature will not update. It constantly shows all my OLD favorites, even though I've changed and re-organized them countless times. I emailed the developers and they said it was a bug they would fix in future versions. However, that was about six months ago, and as you can see, this program hasn't been updated for a long time. Still, I like this program for its ease of use and simplicity, and for the fact that I can see just the links I want to see upon startup.

PhotoFiltre
  • Freeware
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP

qleft  Very nice  qright

PhotoFiltre version 5.6.2
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I'm finding this to be my most useful photo editing program - even moreso than Adobe Photoshop. Why? Because it's easy. Because there are filters for adding frames to photos. It's easy, useful, free, and my photo editing program of choice. Get it!
