Unlocker
  • Freeware
  • Win2000/XP

qleft  Only unlocks files  qright

Unlocker version 1.8.5
  • Interface: 3
  • Features: 2
  • Ease of use: 2
  • Value: 4
  • Overall: 3

Does not unlock folders. If you have a 2 level set of folders /test/test/file.txt and file.txt is locked, and you try to delete the top level folder 'test', you can't, it says it is locked. Obviously (or so it should seem) you try to unlock the folder and it doesn't work. You still can't delete. Confusing.

Budget

  • Win98/ME/2000/XP/Vista

qleft  Windows vista era  qright

Budget version 4.0.2
  • Interface: 1
  • Features: 3
  • Ease of use: 3
  • Value: 1
  • Overall: 2

I would not recommend software this visually unappealing. It works 'ok' but the appearance detracts from the usage so much it is not worth it. This is the OSX/Windows Vista era.. people expect better.

TSW WebCoder
  • Free Trial ($59.99)
  • WinWin (All)

qleft  Best app htm app, don't compare to frontpage!  qright

TSW WebCoder version 2005
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

I've been professionally developing websites for about 8.5 years now. I can honestly say I've sampled 99% of HTML Editors available. NONE of them compare to Webcoder. The program rocks. It is fully customizable so when people say they have a problem with it, usually it is because they haven't fixed it themselves! One reviewer mentioned that Frontpage or Dreamweaver would be better. I'd have to say that is ONLY true if you don't care what your code looks like, if you don't care if your code is clean and cross browser compatible, and if you prefer an interface that treats you like a simpleton :) Webcoder is definitely for people that actually prefer to get into the code (although it does have the usual WYSIWYG component similar to Frontpage). The best part of Webcoder is that if you DO actually find a bug, you can get in touch with the developer personally and rest assured the bug will be fixed amazingly fast. What more could you ask for?

First Page 2006
  • Freeware
  • WinWin (All)

qleft  Not all it's cracked up to be!  qright

First Page 2006 version 3.00
  • Interface: 2
  • Features: 2
  • Ease of use: 1
  • Value: 3
  • Overall: 2

I used to swear by First Page (earlier version). This version does not live up. It has been almost 7 years since an upgrade and its feature set is not adequate. Not only that, but what happens when there's a bug? Do we have to wait another 7 years to get it fixed? No thanks but I'll wait until a developer comes along that updates his/her program adequately, which this one does NOT.

Active WebCam version 6.8

The program works well but the interface is confusing and program appearance GUI is HORRIBLE.

qleft  Not for the average user  qright

Pegasus Mail version 4.21a
  • Interface: 1
  • Features: 3
  • Ease of use: 1
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 2

This is not a bad program, but it is very confusing. The interface needs a lot of work. 256 color icons? Come on. Not only that, but there are a LOT of buttons and it takes a while to figure everything out.

XnView
  • Freeware
  • WinWin (All)

qleft  What a great program!  qright

XnView version 1.70
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 4
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 5

As a previous software site owner, I have reviewed hundreds of little image viewing apps (including Irfanview) and Xnview beats it hands down. Yes, the download is a little larger, which shouldn't be a big deal today. Not only that but the software is infinitely more customizable and much easier to use. My parents couldn't figure out other software but they had no problem with this. It can view so many file formats that it is an amazing tool for any type of design. You no longer need to open up Photoshop to preview tiffs, eps', psds, etc.
