Long live powerdesk
PowerDesk (Free Version) version 6.0
I started using powerdesk back when Mijenix owned it. They sold it to OnTrack, then OnTrack sold it to V-Com and somehow Novatix (Mijenix re-born) also got the rights to it and both companies released a 6.0 version. Now it is in the hands of a new company. So sad that an app so powerful and so useful compared to bare-bones two-pane Explorer can't stay put. I've switched to xplorer2 these days but even that can't compare to this heaven-sent program. I'm still hoping someone will port the OSX Finder app (with 3 panes so you don't lose your place so easily) but all those ports are very unstable.

Google actually broke something *weep*
Picasa
I did like Picasa in it's previous incarnation (v1.618) because of it's rather interesting interface. The groovy timeline feature was since stolen by Adobe Album (which I find confounding and just flat out unuseable) and Picasa's album organization was a bit odd. But now Google has transformed it into a "send your pix to online pay services" app. All the bottom buttons are links to photo sites, and after importing 100 pix, ZERO showed up in my album area. Also the file's Date has become secondary to the date of import into the program (bleh). Maybe I ask too much from an interface (10 minutes and I better be able to do something with it) but I'm back to Picasa 1. My #1 photo app is still ThumbsPlus.

what s the problem?
ZoneAlarm
I haven t had a single problem with either free or Pro ZA since like version 2.1 or so. No bluescreens, no intruders, nothing. I m unsure what the negative reviewers had on their PC s that could cause such errors. ZA is my preferred software firewall. Sygate Personal comes in second.

absolutely the best!
MyUninstaller
This is exactly what the uninstall utility should be... MS s is so bloated in 2k/XP you can bake a cake by the time it loads, and even then it s bare-bones information... MyUn is amazingly thorough, detailed to the extreme.... this beats YrUninstaller! by a mile... no big happy shiny buttons, just all the info you want.... definitely a must-have for app hounds!

not obvious...
A43 File Management Utility
At first it doesn t seem to be much, but after using A43 for oerhaps an hour, you begin to see it s usefulness and unique features. There are some enhancements which would make it even more useful, but for free and as a supplementary file manager, it is outstanding for it s small footprint.
