TimeCore
  • Free Trial ($29.99)
  • WinWin (All)

qleft  It's a good start, but far from perfect.  qright

TimeCore version 2.4.1
  • Interface: 3
  • Features: 3
  • Ease of use: 3
  • Value: 4
  • Overall: 3

I actually have an older (free) version but I tried the newest (paid) version and went back to the free version because I couldn't really see any advantage (for me--YMMV) to warrant the price tag. It's a basic program that helps keep track of the time you spend on projects. It takes some time to get set up, but once you do, entry is fairly easy. What this program really needs to get another "very good" is the ability to keep a running total of how much a client needs to be billed for hours worked--why else would I want to create and input my billing charges and keep track of specific hours worked if the program won't keep track of my hours and I still have to do it manually?! Also, it needs more reports other than a basic Notepad/text or Excel file. That said, I've been searching high and low for hours trying to find something similar and I can't find it...so for now, this works okay.

FastStone Photo Resizer
  • Freeware
  • Win2000/XP/Vista

qleft  1 small glitch in otherwise excellent program  qright

FastStone Photo Resizer version 1.3
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 4
  • Value: 5
  • Overall: 4

I downloaded this program to replace another that didn't give me high-quality reductions. In that area, this program is EXCELLENT. It's also very easy to use. However, I have run across one small problem, and that's when you try to batch resize WITHOUT renaming. All the times I've tried that, I end up with only one photo resized. When it's working, it says the photos are being "replaced" even when they should all be brand new files (?!?) and then only end up with one new resized photo. However, even with that one small glitch, I would still recommend this program.

System Mechanic
  • Free Trial ($49.95)
  • Win2000/XP/Vista/7

qleft  Trial version impossible to uninstall  qright

System Mechanic version 5.0
  • Interface: 2
  • Features: 3
  • Ease of use: 3
  • Value: 1
  • Overall: 2

I installed the trial version and started cleaning. I loved it--very simple touse. Then my computer started spontaneously rebooting. Tech support said I either didn't reboot enough between cleans or I cleaned TOO much and screwed up my system. I had already uninstalled so couldn't "recover" my cleans (although the rebooting stopped). I was also left with a fully-functioning Incinerator. I tried reinstalling and uninstalling again, and this time, I couldn't uninstall--I got an error message saying it was already uninstalled!! The only thing that semi-worked was using Norton Systemworks to uninstall--and even then, I had to do it mostly manually. PLUS, I still have a screwed-up Incinerator icon on my desktop (well, no icon, no link, but I can't delete it). I've run four registry cleaners on my system and have gotten rid of most traces--except for that dang incinertor. I don't know what happened on my system, but I'm sorry I ever tried this.

Photoshop SpeedUp version 1.0
  • Interface: 3
  • Features: 5
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 5

This program is absolutely perfect for someone like me who really only uses Photoshop for basic photo editing and is constantly opening pictures all day long...I just set it to Optimize and my startup went from about 15 seconds to about 5 seconds! And you can't beat the price!

qleft  Great Author Support!  qright

SetNameToTime
  • Overall: 5

I wrote the first comment, and figured I d come back to say I m still LOVING the program... and the author support is the best. Recently I found a small bug, and within hours the author had written me back and informed me there was an update. I made another comment about something I wanted to see, and BAM! Another update. You can t ask for better service!! They ve earned a customer for LIFE!

  • Win98/ME/2000/XP

qleft  So good I paid for the upgrade!  qright

SetNameToTime
  • Overall: 5

I started using this program when it was freeware. After the purchase of a new digital camera and 600+ pictures over a 10-day Christmas vacation...this program was a lifesaver. Of course there are other programs that can batch rename, but this one has the unique ability to rename to the date and time (down to the second) the picture was taken! I am very stingy with my money when it comes to buying or upgrading software...but for this one there was no question. At $15, it´s a steal.

Web Picture Creator
  • Freeware
  • WinWin (All)

qleft  I prefer this over the software I bought!  qright

Web Picture Creator
  • Overall: 4

This program had the main things I was looking for (the ability to add captions and titles) at a great price!! There are only two reasons it doesnt get five stars (I wanted to vote 3.5 but gave them the benefit of the doubt since it IS freeware). [1] The Advanced Settings Template section just overwhelms me terribly and I can t figure it out. I would love to see a more user-friendly way to save templates (i.e. background/link/etc. color choices). [2] There seems to be a glitch (IMO) that occurs if you move the original photo folder after you create the website files--if you do this, you lose EVERYTHING you ve created (photos, captions, colors--and if you have a lot of pictures, that s a lot of lost time and effort). That said, it s still an amazing program and I use it instead of the program I paid $35 for.

Color Schemer
  • Free Trial ($34.99)
  • WinWin (All)

qleft  This is my favorite color program ever!  qright

Color Schemer
  • Overall: 5

This is, by far, the best color-picking design assistant I have come by. My favorite feature is the ability to chose a color and then go lighter or darker to get complimentary colors. Of course, I also like seeing other colors surrounding it - I ve gotten some great ideas for color schemes that way. I used the free program so much online that I finally decided to just go ahead and buy it...which tells you how good I think it is since I hate paying for software!!

BK ReplaceEm

qleft  Very cool indeed.  qright

BK ReplaceEm

I needed a quick program to replace one line of code in 50 html pages. Without reading any instructions (other than looking at the menus and right-click menus) I had it done within minutes. Bravo!

qleft  At first glance, works wonderfully!  qright

WebPassword
  • Overall: 4

After working with the trial version for 10 minutes, I think I'm ready to buy the full version. My web host comes with a password feature, but it involves giving individual users passwords--and I wanted something less intrusive than that and this seems to be it. It really is a simple drag-and-drop procedure and the passwords, once input, are stored in cookies for the duration of your visit to the site. The only minor (and I mean minor) thing I didn't like (but not enough to dissuade me from buying it) is that each page takes a bit longer to load because each page takes time to "decrypt." If my opinion changes after buying the full version and testing it more, I'll come back to update. But until then, I assume I'll be a happy camper!
