SizeMe
  • Freeware
  • Win98/ME/2000/XP

qleft  A lot like burn to the brim  qright

SizeMe version 1.2.1
  • Interface: 4
  • Features: 4
  • Ease of use: 4
  • Value: 4
  • Overall: 4

There is a nice open-source app similar to this called Burn to the Brim that I have been using prior to this. I like SizeMe's drag and drop feature, but BTTB can make ISOs, which is nice too. I'll probably keep both on my machine until I've done a number of comparisons to see which is better at filling up the CDs.

PrimoPDF
  • Freeware
  • WinWin (All)

qleft  Nice but output not as optimized as cutepdf  qright

PrimoPDF version 1.0
  • Interface: 4
  • Features: 3
  • Ease of use: 4
  • Value: 4
  • Overall: 4

I downloaded this and CutePDF Writer. Using comparable quality settings Primo created PDF files that were quite a bit larger than those created by CutePDF Writer. But overall, if you don't mind the increased file size, it is a very good program.

Windows Defender
  • Freeware
  • WinWin XP

qleft  Great, but may not remain free  qright

Windows Defender version BETA
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 4
  • Ease of use: 4
  • Value: 3
  • Overall: 4

This product is great. It found some things on my machine that Ad-Aware and SpyBot missed. However, this is a beta that expires in July and there is no guarantee that it will remain free after that time. Microsoft basically purchased GIANT antispyware, and GIANT wasn't free. I'm hoping that Microsoft will offer this free as a way to overcome the problems it has with IE security.

DefaultMail

qleft  Nice little program  qright

DefaultMail version 2.0
  • Interface: 3
  • Features: 4
  • Ease of use: 4

I have been looking for a program to do this since switching to Windows XP. It works great. My only wish is that this program and the companion program, DefaultBrowser, be combined into one application.

DefaultBrowser
  • Freeware
  • WinWin XP

qleft  Great little program.  qright

DefaultBrowser version 1.0
  • Interface: 3
  • Features: 4
  • Ease of use: 4
  • Value: 4
  • Overall: 4

I have been looking for a program to do this since switching to Windows XP. My only complain is that the browsers listed are odd choices. For example, Avant Browser is much more widely known than GreenBrowser. And there are no menu choices for any of the Mozilla based browsers, only IE shells. The user has to navigate to the Mozilla/Firefox EXE file instead. Surely Firefox has more users than GreenBrowser. It seems to me that a better solution would be for the program to check for installed browsers and only list the ones the user has installed. This would elimination any confusion the user may have. The companion program, DefaultMail does this. Lastly, I think this program and the companion program, DefaultMail, should be combined into one application.

IZArc
  • Freeware
  • Win2000/XP/2003/Vista

qleft  Good with some exceptions  qright

IZArc version 3.4.1.6
  • Interface: 4
  • Features: 4
  • Ease of use: 4
  • Value: 4
  • Overall: 4

I have been using IZArc for quite some time. I really like the interface, with the folder tree on the left, a la Windows Explorer. However, I recently had a problem with some large (over 10MB) zip files with a pretty deep folder structure in them. IZArc would not extract the archive. It would tell me the archive was corrupt. I was able to extract the files individually, but not as a whole. I downloaded WinZip and it opened the archive just fine. I'm not sure if this program uses its own zip routines or some of the free ones floating out there, so I don't know if the problem is specific to IZArc or not. I've since switched to ZipGenius and though I don't like the GUI as much, it has been more stable for me, and I have not experience the same problem. IZArc is great other than that one problem, which rendered it useless to me.
