I've used several similar programs in the past that monitor vital statistics such as RAM, CPU, hard drives etc. Most were more intrusive than I liked or took too much desktop space. StatBar is a fantastic little program that serves it's purpose but doesn't get in the way. It's totally configurable with handy gadgets such as volume control, log off/reboot/shutdown/lock work station buttons, CPU/memory/uptime meters and a Google search window just to name a few. What I like best about StatBar is that it resides as a bar (top or bottom) that can be color matched to your windows tool bar. It's a small, very useful little tool. The price is right too.

Diskeeper Pro version 8.0
  • Interface: 3

I tried Diskeeper 8 Pro and had several problems. First I had two system crashes when I tried to use it. When I finally got it to run and defraged my drives, it didn't defrag effectively. Both drives were still heavily fragmented. I tried a total of 3 programs on my recently built XP Pro, P4 3.0gz system with a SATA 320GB raid-0 array for my C: drive and a 250GB IDE backup drive. I'd never defragmented either drive since building the machine. My C: drive was 47% fragemented and my D: drive was 99% fragmented. The Windows defragmenter and Diskeeper Pro failed to do the job. I even tried boot mode defrag and all other options in Diskeeper Pro. none worked. The last program, O & O Defrag, worked perfectly on the first try. It also has a cleaner interface. I'd recommend trying O & O Defrag for your XP Pro system.

O&O Defrag Professional

O&O Defrag Professional version 6.5 Pro
  • Interface: 5
  • Features: 4
  • Ease of use: 5
  • Value: 2
  • Overall: 4

I tried both O & O Defrag and Diskeeper 8 Pro. O & O Defrag had a better interface and was a better product in my opinion. I used both programs on my recently built P4 3.0gz system with a SATA 320GB raid-0 array for my C: drive and a 250GB IDE backup drive. I'd never defragmented either drive since building the machine. My C: drive was 47% fragemented and my D: drive was 99% fragmented. The Windows deframenter didn't work and Diskeeper Pro attempted to defrag both drives with no improvement. I even tried boot mode defrag and all other options in Diskeeper Pro. none worked. O & O worked perfectly on the first try. The Stealth mode is a great addition to the normal defrag options since it works in the background. I'd highly recommend O & O Defrag though I think it's much too expensive for a single purpose tool that should have come with the operating system. It's still a must have if you want to keep your system healthy.
