Excellent...works well and causes no problems
OneLoupe version 2.01
Tiny and effective and does not interfere with anything else and uses minimal resources. I prefer it to ZoomIt, my previous favorite screen magnifier.

Makes a boring task great fun
SpaceSniffer version 1.1.0.0
This is neat to use. Frankly, I think old-fashioned text-based space usage reporters with printable outputs are more practical, but I still use this more than any other just because the responsive graphics are so much fun.

Handy to have, no negatives.
Universal Viewer version 4.0
Handy to have on your system for quick peaks at odd files. Ability to add Commander and other plugins makes this a one-stop (that is, Universal) file viewer. Provides convenient access to lots of proprietary file formats when you don't have the normal program (such as MS Office). One suggestion: bundle more plugins or make it easier to figure out what to download and install.

Features poorly implemented and cryptic
Pitaschio version 2.25
I wanted to like such a small multi-featured program. It's light on resources and doesn't cause problems, but none of its features are very effective and some are hard to figure out. Switch to a different browser (Avant and Maxthon are IE-based) and get more features in a better package.

Simple to use, reliable, compatible, free
Microsoft SyncToy version 2.0
I've used every public version of this, and they have all worked well for me. Never crashes, never creates system problems, never behaves strangely. Will not sync open files, however, at least not under WinXP Home or Pro.

More convenient access to XP features
XP Syspad version 7.9.6
It works just as described. There are no new capabilities here, but access to all the built-in features and programs is convenient both because of its simplicity and because you don't have to remember the various places Microsoft has hidden the goodies.

There are better
AMP Calendar version 2.41
Slightly better than a printed calendar, but it used 11Mb on my machine. Nicely formatted but basic display. I thought it would be handy, but lack of holidays and appointments made me replace it quickly. Worked OK on my XP Pro/SP3 machine, but there are lots of desktop calendars available.

A minor convenience
Desk Drive version 1.6.8
It works well for me (XP Pro/SP3). I use it to quickly create and delete shortcuts to both USB and shared drives, which I allocate and deallocate frequently. Documentation of the options would be helpful. A suprising annoyance is tha I have to manually exit the program to shutdown my system. It's convenient in a small way, and the shutdown problem detracts from its value.

Did not work for me
EASEUS Partition Master version 2.0
I have the Pro version, and it didn't do the one thing I wanted: to shrink an existing partition and create a new partition in the newly-freed space. This is exactly the sort of unusual capability I would expect to find in a partition manager that aims to replace FDISK, and it wasn't up to the task.

Works well, but updating version may not work
Secunia PSI version 0.9.0.1
Nice for warning you about insecure and old programs, although "old" isn't the same as "useless." However, I couldn't update from an earlier version. I'm a knowledgeable user, with several "cleaner" tools and an understanding of registry editing, and I STILL couldn't get the update to work. The website has suggestions for solving the problem, but they didn't help me. You might want to wait for the final version to be available.

Makes ie7 much more convenient
IE7Pro version 2.1
Evem though I use only a few of its features, I find that IE7Pro is a major enhancement of IE7's usability. No problems of any sort under WinXP. I ran V2.0 in parallel with IEPlus, and IE7Pro has a lot more features (although IEPlus has a nicer look to its configuration dialog). V2.1 is a significant improvement over V2.0.

Nice, but doesn't index .pst files
Copernic Desktop Search version 2.1.1
I tried using this for a few weeks, mostly to index e-mails and Excel spreadsheets. I used both manual indexing and scheduled indexing. In both cases, CDS periodically cleared the index and rebuilt it from scratch, but without the e-mails stored in my PST files. PST files are an important way to prevent server overload and to free yourself from reliance on server availability. I uninstalled CDS because it couldn't handle this.

Excellent...tiny...practical...fun
ZoomIt version 1.51
The screen magnifier is the best I've ever seen, but it's the annotation tool that I find is really handy when giving presentations, or even showing someone your screen one-on-one. The countdown timer is off-topic and rather silly, but you're not FORCED to use it, are you? This is a typical SYSINTERNALS program: tiny, functional, handy, unobtrusive, free.

Very good, and v2.8 adds useful feature
Undelete Plus version 2.8
Works well. V2.8 adds a "Clean" feature that wipes out old, overwritten files and clears the directory, so future undelete scans are faster and not cluttered with junk file fragments. However, the feature is not documented, and it does not appear to work on USB drives. When I run it on a USB drive, it finds 30,000 files (I stop it after that), and the Clean Disk option doesn't affect that. Even so, it works fine. V2.6 had problems with JPG files, but V2.7 and later work fine for me.

Excellent
Unlocker version 1.8.3
Stays out of the way, pops up when it thinks you need help, works perfectly whenever called on. Small and reliable. It couldn't be better.

Simple and cute...but dangerous
FontRenamer version 1.0
Helpfully turns cryptic names into plain English. BUT...some of those names (*.FON, mostly) are hard-coded into Windows and Windows applications, and changing their names makes them unavailable. Windows and other programs will instead use some other font, and as a result many dialog windows will be misformatted. This isn't just ugly, it prevents you from selecting action buttons, selecting from lists, etc., so you'd better be prepared to restore some files to their original names. Since there won't be any error messages from the affected programs, you may have to do some guessing.

Ok, but there are better on snapfiles
ZipGenius version 6.0.2.1060
I've had this for a year. Works well, but it is huge and its interface is confusing. Views but DOES NOT EXTRACT files from archives created by LHA. Author is enthusiastic, and program is regularly updated, but the emphasis seems to be on pretty screens rather than on producing a fast, compact, and intuitive program without bugs. The "Suite" version includes an FTP program and a file splitter, both OK but nothing special. There are lots of other well-reviewed freeware archiving programs on this site that strike me as more practical.
