Qm - The Quick Mailer version 2.2
  • Interface: 3
  • Features: 3
  • Ease of use: 1
  • Value: 1
  • Overall: 2

I tried using this to send via an authenticated SMTP server that works fine with BLAT (free command line emailer) using the exact same settings but it would never actually send the message. Several times it ran the CPU to 100% and locked up. Several times it just locked up but at least didn't kill the CPU. Only once did it get as far as to display a message saying it couldn't connect. I've always wanted a little utility like this that would do what BLAT does but with a minimal GUI. If you had your hopes up like I did that this would do the trick, you might want to lower your expectations a bit so you won't be disappointed. Hopefully the author will do some more testing and get the issues fixed but based on my experience attempting to get it to work, for now I couldn't recommend the Quick Mailer.

FastStone Player

qleft  Good wmp alternative (installer calls home)  qright

FastStone Player version 3.2
  • Interface: 3
  • Features: 3
  • Ease of use: 3
  • Value: 3
  • Overall: 3

As an alternative to the ever clunky WMP, FastStone Player works fairly well. It's missing a lock to an exact multiple of the actual video resolution which is annoying but may not be an issue for most people. The player also seems to assume the user always wants to play through an entire directory of video files or loop one file over and over. It doesn't just play a file and stop at the end of it like other players. Also, with the massive problem that adware/spyware has become, I get a bit alarmed whenever a program or installer attempts to "call home," so others who are concerned about this sort of thing should know that the installer for v3.2 attempted to contact the author's site (perhaps checking for later versions? who knows). ZoneAlarm blocked it but I'd have preferred it didn't do that without asking first.
