Very nice
USB Safely Remove version 3.2
I have had difficulty getting the "safe to remove" message when I want to disconnect an external hard drive. I was getting one of those messages saying I should check back later. Really? I need instant gratification :-) and this program delivers. It identifies whatever is holding my stuff hostage, then gives me the option to shut it down. I registered my copy after only one hour of testing and reading.

Fully loaded!
XYplorer version 6.50
This is one of those programs that provides a lot of bang for a few bucks. I have not found anything out there that compares. Too many features to praise here makes this a must try. XYplorer is one of the best Shareware investments that I have ever made. I'm hard to please but more than satisfied with this very professional and user friendly program.

Clickster version 1.10
I've really enjoyed playing with Clickster for the past week. I downloaded so many free MP3 files that I sent the author a donation. He sent me a link to download the Pro version. It has a deeper search and the downloads are faster too. Fantastic value and support for free or a donation of whatever it's worth to you. Very hard to beat!

Remarkable
EverNote version 1.5.0.207b Basic
Thumbs up, kudos, yippee, superlatives, fun. Try this one! I don't think you are likely to be disappointed.

I garbled it up!
PixelCryptor version 1.0
This is a quick and easy way to encrypt without a password. I tried changing just 1 pixel in my original (key) image and just as stated, this is not allowed by Pixelcryptor. This is a very nice program but protect your original image or back it up. If you fail to do this your encrypted data could become hopelessly lost until the end of time, Amen!

Not quite..
Free Hide Folder version 1.2
Initially I was excited to find freeware that could hide folders effectively. As I played with the program my enthusiasm faded when I discovered that I had an image viewer/organizer that not only saw the renamed folder as (chkdsk.100yy) but it allowed me to view all the files within. That aside, I liked the program and if that flaw can be corrected I could recommend it and bump up my ratings to very good. I was able to duplicate my little experiment repeatedly.

Cool
EarthquakeView version 1.1
Years ago during a world series game a disastrous quake hit the SF/Oakland area of CA and I developed an interest in seismic activity. Over the past few years with the advancements of the internet, software and related technology it has become much more interesting. The USGS will keep anyone informed via E-mail bulletins of quakes over M5. This program monitors the activity and makes all this a real snap with links to USGS for details and latest tsunami reports. The graphics are cool too. I think the the program is nicely done.

Marvelous!
TreeSize version 1.78
Oh joy, oh rapture unforseen! Highly recommended.

Heads up!
ArovaxShield version 1.2.348
I was pleased with this program's performance initially. I installed a new internet explorer and could not get arovaxshield to allow the browser to go directly to my homepage vs. the run once introductory page of the explorer. I un-installed arovaxshield and re-booted. That's when I discovered the uninstallation process disabled my firewall, my anti-virus protection and also administrative priviledges. This prevented me from activating the firewall or the AV protection. I found some other undesirable registry changes as well. In short if you put this baby on you system, you need to know how to remove it without making some uninvited changes in your start up process.

Diary Dominator version 1.22c beta
This is a very nice program in my opinion. I really like the idea of the mood, health and weather drop downs and the overall layout. The password protection is also important. I would like to see a search option that provides an index of hits throughout the diary instead of being limited to the current page.

Nice!
SpamScreener Free Edition version 1.0.3
I've been looking for a spam screener that met my personal expectations of an anti-spam program. This is the first freeware utility of this type that impressed me. This is a very nice program and I recommend it highly.

My choice!
Yankee-Clipper version 1.0.4.3
I've been using this one for a long time. I don't pay much attention to other clipboard programs any more because this one handles all my needs. Yankee-Clipper is one of the finest and complete utilities that I have ever used. I give it all the superlatives!

Cool
Posteriza version 1.1.10
The first time I used Posteriza was to enlarge an e-mail photo sent to me by my nephew from Iraq. The program easily produced a poster version of that photo about 36" x 24". The individual pages were then trimmed and glued . I framed the assembled poster and gave it to my sister (his mother). She showed it to all her friends and co-workers and eventually presented it to my nephew when he returned to the states. I guess it knocked their socks off. I have continued to use Posteriza and I am pleased with the results and all the compliments that I receive. This ia a very nice program.

Not a good student!
Spamihilator version 0.9.9.9
I used this program for about a week. Possibly my imagination but it seemed to be a spam magnet. I tried repeatedly to teach it NOT to block several newsletters, bulletins, and special offers from a couple sources that I had requested. I also tried to teach it to reject a couple sources that have been trying to get me to re-finance my home or sell me something. Spamihilator does not pay attention to this instructor and therefore has disappointing grades on my report card.

WordWeb version 4.0
This is just the handiest, easy program that I on a daily basis. I do my share of information processing with a computer and I have become dependent on WordWeb. The program quickly defines words that I am unfamiliar with, identifies synonyms, and even provides a usage sample. I highly recommend WordWeb.

NoteIT version 1.93
I have always been interested in this type of program and I was really impressed with some of the handy features of NoteIt. She has a pretty face too! I highly recommend this program to all those who like jotting, saving, locking, E-mailing, and organizing their notes. Nice job!

Fatal blue
Responding Heads
Maybe I have a cruddy microphone but I could not get the heads to recognize my commands very often. I got really frustrated when the program imploded into a dreaded blue DOS screen telling me Windows needed to shut down to avoid damage. Responding heads had to go.

Highly recommended
Open Expert version 1.40
I've been happily using this utility for quite some time. This program is very user friendly, very stable, and extremely handy. I like opening any file extension I've listed with any number of menu choices that I configure to open it with. Good work by BAxBEx.

XstreamRadio version 2.01

Very impressive
Google Earth version 3.0.0395 beta
Usually when the name Google is attached to something there are folks out there really proud of their work; and I am interested. This program is a blast, fun to use and full of good stuff.

Not for me..
Media Purveyor version 1.2.3
I admit that I'm into instant gratification. I was frustrated with this program, not impressed with all the prompting interface wizardry, and to top things off, it locked up trying to read some of my larger graphics folders. The freeze was not an isolated event. It is hard for me to recommend a program that locks up on my system and also requires tolerance, patience and other qualities that I lack.

Hangs
Visere version 2.2.0.7 beta
The program had problems with some of my image files or perhaps it just has a personal issue with me, but it froze up several times as it scanned a couple of my folders. That aside, I liked the overall quality of the program. Sadly I uninstalled it after a couple of trial runs. I have numerous other image viewers on my system and none of the others jam up like this one does. I can't recommend a program that gives me the freeze.

Amazing
OpenOffice version 1.14
This is the most robust freeware package that I have used. I could load my comments with a lot of comparatives and praises for this very professional work but I would rather just suggest you try it yourself. It just keeps getting better and better.

No way
FxFoto version 3.0.052
The registered version may be a very good program but the freeware version frequently harasses you to upgrade. I get frustrated with nag screens when you are also given options that are no more than additional nag screens because your option is only available in the registered version. I upgrade programs that DON'T do this, I uninstalled this one.

Nice
ScreenHunter Freeware version 4.0.41
This program is easier to use than my mouse. Grabbing quality images has never been more simple. I've been using for a long time and I've yet to encounter a problem or be disappointed in it's performance. Top notch.

Superior
KeePass Password Safe version 0.99b
There a a lot of freeware password keepers but there are a couple at the top of the heap. This is one of them which is evidenced by Snapfiles' rating and also by popularity. This superior program has earned both.

Kudos
Mr. Captor version 3.10
This is the most feature rich capture utility that I have ever enjoyed using. The program functions just as described and I love grabbing the precise frames I want off my DVD movies. Mr. Captor is a fun, stable program, and an excellent value. This is a superior work in my opinion.

A fun small wonder
SlickRun version 3.5.3.25
This is an all around great program. I love the idea of typing the first few letters of the word "morning" and the quick response of having E-mail and my favorite news source land on the desktop. The program is intuitive, stable, easily configurable and limited only to your imagination. Slick, clever, and smooth are all appropriate adjectives for this small wonder.

Gets my vote!
PhotoCDBrowser version 2.95
This is a fun, easy to use program that allows me to do stuff with the .ini file and really control what happens. I never came across the help file and didn't need it. I just printed out the .ini and the hotkeys definition files for reference and had a ball making option/preference changes. This is a quality work that performed well on my system.

Still using it!
Internet Explorer version 6.0 SP1
I have been using IE for many years. I have had very few problems considering the number of running hours and the atrocities I have inflicted on every OS that I've used. I have run my PC at times with more corruption within than there is in government. IE 6 is probably the best and most stable version. It performs well no matter what I do to it. I've experimented with numerous other browsers and have eventually removed all of them with the exception of Firefox. IE is still a winner with me!

A wonderful program for me!
Exifer version 2.1.5
This program allows me to work with information stored in headers of image files and never risk losing any meta data. Exifer can can read meta data generated by digital cameras as mentioned and save a backup of any EXIF, IPTC, or Comment data. You can then make your photo enhancements with your favorite editor and never lose meta data since you can add it back into the picture from the backup data. You can also copy and paste the data from one file to another. Importing, exporting, or editing the meta data is a breeze with Exifer. The program can also add very professional looking watermarks. I have really enjoyed working with this program and perhaps if I send Mr. Schmidt another postcard he'll update the program again.

Super
11view version 2.5e
I was impressed with the quality, stability, options, and simplicity of this excellent program. If I had not come across the review submitted by (fair is fair), I may have missed this one. I also use 11view as my default full screen viewer. It's a super viewer in my opinion.

Had to try this one.
kd version Autumn 2003
After reading fileflash's comment I had to try installing this one. I'm happy to say that I did not encounter any similar difficulties. The program created the folder(kd)with a .log, .exe, .hlp, and an uninstall file. The executable functioned without a hitch and with some experimentation I began to have some fun. It created thumbnails quickly ,easily and with adjustable size and quality. I'm pleased to say it performed quite well for me. [Editor's note: The author of KD has fixed the bug immediately after it was reported in the previous comment]

Crasssshh!
Folder View version 2.1
I did not find this program all that helpful and while experimenting with various options we crashed. I may have hung in with it a while but I just couldn't imagine why I should.

A must for me
WinAlarm version 1.1.0.103
Just an excellent program. I have it on all the computers that I use, home or away. It's especially useful to cognitively challenged folks, like me.

Problems
ZoneAlarm version 5.1.011
After I began using broadband I installed ZoneAlarm. Then I could not maintain a connection to the internet. After a couple days of making adjustments and readjustments I contacted the cable company & asked for assistance. Their top man came out and after about 4 hours he surrendered and went home, said he'd send someone else to help the next day. The problem was not resolved until ZoneAlarm had been completely removed from my system. I installed Norton Firewall and have been at peace ever since. I guess you could say I was safe using ZoneAlarm but alas, I was internetless.

Good stuff
Ad-Aware 2007 version 1.05 SE Pers.
I have been using Ad-Aware for a long time & have always been pleased with the performance. I recommend it to anyone complaining about spyware or adware. A wk ago my son stated he had a VX2 problem and Ad-Aware reported that it had removed it. Later it said it could not be removed because files were in use. I tried to help & eventually found that there was a Photo-Sharing prog that was the real culprit. After Ad-Aware deleted the VX2, the source program renamed & re-installed it's spyware files. Since the source program shared .dll files they could not be removed. I tried editing and deleting some registry entries, starting in safe mode & then deleting, restoring the system to an earlier date and nothing seemed to work. I eventually suspected his new photo sharing program & uninstalled it.. hooray. That kind of stealth crap should be illegal. I appreciate Ad-Aware for great help & Snapfiles for a freeware site I can trust!

Outstanding
PhotoFiltre version 6.0.2
This is a wonderful program for me. I can do stuff with my photos without having to read the help file or get involved in a little interactive workshop to aquaint myself with techniques and options. This is just a outstanding quality program.

Not for me.
Copernic Desktop Search version 1.1
I was not too impressed with the internet search and I found it unstable on my system. I couldn't find an image search filtering option for image size and it took a considerable bite of my RAM. The program made some changes in my system and menu bar without permission. Being a technologically challenged person, I found this disturbing. A positive note- I thought the search capability for files and E-mail on my system were impressive. Overall..not for me.

Simply the best
IrfanView version 3.95
This is the most complete freeware program I have ever used. It is as stable as any I have used, is incredibly fast, and has more options and plugins than I can mention. Plugins are all downloadable in a single zipfile. There are many freeware graphic viewers/resizers/rotators and other utility programs available and some have a much prettier face, but none I have used compare to the overall functionality of this amazing work. This stable performer gets my vote for an academy award. I salute Mr. Irfan Skiljan for a truly remarkable program that somehow is still free.
