Audio/video not synchronized
I've tried AVS DVD Player on a few different computers, all in the mid-range as far as computing power goes (P4 ~2GHz+, 512MB), and I found DVD playback to have unsynchronized audio/video. In other words, the soundtrack did not match the action. It was off by at least a few seconds. It was bad enough to make this player unusable, which is really too bad. Incidentally, another free player worked fine on the same computers (VLC). I like the looks of this player, and the idea of a free DVD Player program that requires no additional codec is splendid. But its performance leaves it flat. Another downside is that the DVD decoder doesn't seem to be shared, so don't plan to install this app then be able to watch DVDs in Windows Media Player (if you couldn't already), unless you have another compatible DVD decoder installed.

So far, it's great!
I wanted a free, dependable, no-adware-etc DVD player. The developers of AVS DVD Player have evidently listened to users' comments, since this latest version works on my computer with none of the problems earlier reviews have mentioned. And they're polite: it doesn't automatically associate itself with a zillion file types or take over the computer's context-menus! On my computer it works better than PowerDVD v5. Given its 3-star rating and user-review cautions, this DVD player was a very pleasant surprise. Great freeware!

The very best price
After another Windows crash, I found I could no longer play DVDs. Bummer! After discovering that I needed a codec of some kind, I started comparing prices. I tried DVDWin which seemed excellent but I thought the price was a bit high! Eventually I discovered the AVS DVD player which seems to do everything I want, and do it well, and the price at zero dollars just can't be beaten! There may be faults, as others have suggested, but I was just looking for a good inexpensive player and I found the AVS player! I found no faults! I don't look a gift horse in the mouth!!

Must be improved !
With all the respect to the designer, for the excellent idea one thing has to be said: Please work on it. At this moment it takes too much CPU and RAM! If my computer: (AMD 3.7Ghz +2Gb of Ram + Nvidia 7600Gt video card +24bit Soundcard) and#61664; can not play movies smoothly, then ? I hope that the next version will solve the problem and AVS will deserve high ratings. My cpu went to 100% and video was in slower motion

Needs more work
I installed this application expecting to play my DVDs, but instead, it brought up the DVD menu and the computer sat there, drive thrashing away when I hit play. AVS presented me with a nice big red 'X' while it was supposedly playing, but I did not hear or see any video. The interface was indeed nice, but I didn't really get a good opportunity to use it since the video would not play. Installing another DVD application allowed me to play with no issues. I like the concept of free DVD playing software, but I think this one should go back on the drawing board for more work.

Good but ould be better
It is a nice app. Good interface. Excellent value..., but too slow even on PCs with fast processors, good amount of RAM and a pretty good video card (for example: P-IV 2.8GHz HT, 1.5GB RAM, nVidia's 6200 256MB RAM, respectively). Summary: nice but consumes too many resources. As a programmer myself, I have to completely agree with the previous review: function follows form, not the other way around. As we say in Puerto Rico, in rice and beans, practicality comes over looks.

Fatal flaws
This DVD player looks nice but has some serious flaws: 1) It does not deinterlace. If you watch video that was designed for TV, you'll see the jagged edges from playing interlaced video as if it were progressive. IMO, this totally disqualifies the program. 2) There is no way to make the controls sticky or force them to come in front of the playback window if that playback window is moved on top of the controls. Minor issue: More skins or the ability to create skins would be nice. The enclosed ones aren't bad but they aren't as visually easy to use as the classic interfaces of PowerDVD or WinDVD. The interface is quite attractive. Too bad the programmers didn't create proper function FIRST. Function follows form, not the other way around.
