#1 in many areas
WinPatrol is #1 in many areas. It's not only an awesome security, it's more... plus Bill P was brave enough to refuse those stupid toolbar installers and turned down a large sum to keep his software ethics. This should say a lot about him and the software he creates. 5!

The best startup manager/process terminator
Yep you read right. I would support this program, and recommend it to any one, who is looking for a startup manager. This program has so many features, it's Great, no wait es ist Prima. You need not a process terminator, a service manager, nor a startup manager. This program has that and more. This program is so good, I supported their works, and registered. The registered version has online support, where the free version is limited. I am proud to recommend, and use this program. You will not find a better program then this. WINPATROL is the best.

A must
We have six computers running in the family, and we work with computer support. When reinstalling Windows - or making a fresh installation - the procedure is always the same: 1. OS, 2. antivirus/firewall, and 3. WinPatrol. This software is indispensable, but I do recommend an upgrade to the PLUS version.

All PCs should have this installed
What a brilliant program! Hardly uses any resources but will alert you everytime something wants to make changes in the registry. Pop up alerts only happen infrequently so if a WinPatrol alert does pop up it actually means something, unlike firewall pop ups which often alert you to perfectly safe processes, only you have to troll the internet to find out whether to allow or deny it! If you haven't just downloaded a new program and you get a change to registry alert, there is a fair chance it could be detecting malware activity. WinPatrol notified me of Trojan downloader trying to execute and allowed me to block the activity whilst I used Adware to get rid of the offending item. If you've got this little gem of a program installed you don't really need a "real time" Antispyware shield which may well slow your program down and infact some paid for antispyware shields only do what WinPatrol does for free! Highly recommended, every home should have it!

Wow...
This program is easily worth $30 or $40 bucks. I love the internet! (and of course the kind people who share their labor)

Nifty start-up manager!
This is the best start-up manager. I've used numerous others but I always revert back to it. This should be the very first application that one should install after Windows. At the moment I'm using the latest PLUS version (WinPatrol PLUS v12.0.2007.2).

A superb monitoring tool.
I used the free version and bought the Plus version after liking what I saw in the free version. The biggest incentives for my going that route were; the access to file information and real-time monitoring feature. The support is top-notch also! Win Patrol has caught exploits while I was browsing sites that should have been clean.

Very useful, light on resources
Great little software. always keeps running on my computers. not a real time protection, but tells you about important changes. I also use Startup Inspector. that has to be run manually.

Very nice, but it can be improved
I have being using this for a a while now. It does not consumes lots of system resources, it is very stable and informative. Real-time notifications are too slow. I have it installed on my system because it's informative value and for process control. Nice if you are not a freak of security in your system, but if you are looking for a real-time fast notification and clean up utility this is nor for you.

Handy to have around
Been using this for a few years now. It's easy on system resources, very stable and very informative. However I believe that with the advent of many free sophisticated security programs out now that Winpatrol is being left behind. I still have it installed on my system but only for its informative value and for process control. That being said, other security software that I'm running gives me notification on an intrusion way before Winpatrol does. I believe that in this day and age of advanced malware, trojans, etc. it's more important then ever to have constant monitoring (not periodic) and fast (i.e. instant) notification.

Very useful utility
It's a very handy utility that informs the (USER) if there are program(s) that tries to alter your change program files on your system. So you could think of it as your system guard dog with attitude. *grin*

Pet lovers, Scotty is the greatest. He doesn't only watch and bark, but tells you before he does. The thieves don't have a chance. This is the best startup watcher and I do have another that I like "Starter" But Scotty, you have to love him and why? He is free and you don't have to feed him. I wish humans were so good to me!!!

Helpful, but seriously, seriously overrated
Let me put things into perspective here, so people who expect truly good design, like me, don't get a surprise. WinPatrol is handy, but could use serious improvement. And I'll tell you why. It doesn't prevent registry changes; it just tries to undo them after the fact. It also polls only once per minute, at most. These two factors in combination reduce its effectiveness greatly. If I were a malware author, I'd add a startup entry, and immediately after that, I'd make your system crash. WinPatrol would be none the wiser. And 90% of the time after installation of a normal program that requires a reboot, you will have rebooted before WinPatrol noticed anything. There are other bugs and problems inherent to WinPatrol, but I'm out of space... So, it can be handy, but it's far, far from a panacea.

The first line of defense
WinPatrol is simply the first line of defense in protecting your computer. It will monitor startup programs, your restart file, your hosts file, IE homepage, and restoration file, allowing you to prevent changes to any of these. It also permits you to remove programs from the start menu (those annoying programs you installed that automatically put themselves in the startup menu without an option to take them out) and active tasks with the option to kill the task. It will list any IE helpers installed, any scheduled tasks, and file associations with the option to remove an item or revert a change. It additionally will list the cookies in your system and allow you to remove them or block specific cookies. All this in a stable program for free. There is a plus option available for a one time fee, irregardless how many times the program is updated.

Great program!
After a while, and with lots of programs installed, it is hard to keep track and know what each file loading at startup is. This program (included in the Plus version) allows me to just click on a file and the WinPatrol database tells me what it is, what its for...etc. I was able to disable a lot of junk that was starting with Win XP that I really didn't need. I love it and recommend the Plus (paid) version for anyone who wants to get a real inside look at what is loading and why.

Protection from startup issues
Within 3 minutes of my installing this program it caught a Mcafee executable for a product I uninstalled trying to reinsert itself into my startup. After I clean things up I don't want them coming back. This is the only product that can do this for me. I'll take that for free. While sitting in the system tray it doesn't use much CPU but it uses 8-9 k of memory. On the Weak side - I can't easily access critical information on what any process is or does, and whether it is dangerous or not without signing up for the plus product. In that case it's not worth it. If you have to pay to find out what each process is the ultimate troubleshooter gives more detail without running off to the web to find it and has a color coded interface. For Free - you need it to keep things out of your registry startup area.

Every home should have one
Great all round watchdog, replaces several other tools I used before. Advises of new (possibly malicious) startup progs. Shows and auto-manages cookies. Shows active tasks, scheduled tasks and services. Also shows "IE Helpers" which may include spyware etc. Lets you keep or delete any of the above too. WOW! or maybe WUFF...

Winpatrol startup control
WinPatrol is an excellent App that can control your startup list along with other things such as Windows services and tasks. Also notifies you when there is a new registry entry not previously found (good for catching Spyware). Excellent program.

This one deserves a 5 star, if it were just for the good cookie management, but then it also is very good as a startup item monitor/manager. But wait! There's more...
