The only flaw I've been able to find in this program that I use everyday is that it locks up now and then. I used to be annoyed by this tendency, but then I found the cure. POPFile places an icon in the system tray. If the mouse pointer passes over that icon, POPFile crashes. Clearly, this is a flaw in an otherwise well designed program. To cure it, hide the icon. That's done by going to POPFile's configuration tab. Under Windows, in the lower right hand corner, an option says "Show POPFile icon in Windows system tray?" Change its setting to No. That eliminates the problem. Rather than clicking on the POPFile icon to make changes to the program, simply point your browser to http://127.0.0.1:8080. Knowing about the icon trick raised my rating of POPFile to five stars. Of course, it would be even better if the developer fixed the problem...

Although I have recently switched to POPFile, I instantly found it to be simple, customizable and highly affective at sorting my mail. I have a simple configuration with two buckets, spam and clean. After less the 20 mails spam was correctly being filed inside my mail client (I use a rule to route [spam] pre-fixed mails to a folder). I have created some 'magnets' which enables me to mark mails to a particular address as spam. Any mail that get misfiled is a breeze to reclassify with the simple web interface. With all my mail in my mail client I can easily see what is right or wrong (wrong about 3 times so far). This software does not automatically re-configure your mail client, but this is in the documentation on what you need to do (sub 30 second fix if you know your mail client). A great piece of software that fits my needs a treat.

I have been using POPFile for several months and for the most part am very pleased with it. I have tried other antispam programs, and other than the occasional lockup (don't know why this happens), this is the best spam classification system I have found. I love how it 'learns' to distinguish different types of email. With subject header modification, my Outlook Express rules aren't as complicated to setup as they used to be :) I can have a spam bucket, a ham bucket, a personal bucket, a commerce bucket, a spoof bucket, etc. and POPFile can learn to classify them all. I love it!

I am a web-administrator, a web-designer and a web and non-web programmer. I can decently consider myself as being some computer-literate user, or "over-average" computer user. Yet, i had some problems setting up popfile for my gmail account. The documentation is not very well done, and i had to find my answer using google searches. Then, i did set up a few rules within popfile. Now, i have to say that my computer is on 24/7, and outlook is on too as a background task. And often, popfile crashes randomly without any evident cause, nor any warning out of the system warning. The way PopFile works is good, because it can filter all mail, and works with all e-mail clients. But its instability makes it a bad choice for everyday use.

I have used several anti-spam programs, but as the amount of spam increased to over 600 pieces a day across my email accounts I looked for one that was fast and effective. POPfile is definitely the answer to my prayers. It is one of those Bayesian, "learning" programs that need some training to get accurate. It is very easy to do and after a very short time the accuracy has been amazing. I only get false negatives and false positives on rare occasions now. My statistics show accuracy is 251 errors on 69,232 messages or 99.63 percent! I had no trouble setting this up as a second "proxy" so that it works in tandem with my Norton Anti-virus. Instructions on how to do that are on the home site pages. I can't recommend this program any more highly. Even if you need help from a friend to get it installed and configured, I think you will agree that it is well worth it.
