I tried Metapad,NoteTab,Notepad++,Win32Pad,Copywriter and realized that neither of them can read Cyrillic (Russian and other Clovenian), displaying letters as question marks. It was first Prog which managed to do it.It's important,'coz I usually visited Russian/English websites and copy interesting Info about new Progs,so I can use only text editor that is capable to save them in UNICODE ,otherwise all info from Russian sites will be lost. Windows Notepad was irreplaceable, but now I've got alternative! Thanks a lot! I'd prefer to get from this Prog another 2 things: ability to save Bookmarks to see them when you open your text next time and highlight selected text (like Copywriter does).I don't use it for HTML jobs,so don't know,if some improvements can be done there as well.

I've tried many different text editors. My conclusion is that this one is the best for its size(Very compact) and price (FREE). It's got ALL the features you want, none of the b***, and it's extremly easy to use. Another great feature is the 'No need to Install anything'. The editor is 'one file only' util. TIP: I have this editor ready on a floppy for instant use whenever I switch computers. Try it - You'll love it. (money back guarantee...)

I've tried and I use lots of text editors on my system, but Notepad2 is the one I choose as my favorite portable editor on USB pendrive. It doesn't need installation, it's extremely light and fast, it supports Unicode (which many others do not), has syntax highlighting (which some other lightweight editors do not), nice word wrap at window border and cool zoom buttons. It's very configurable, a pity it stores settings in the registry instead of a file, so you can't bring your preferences with you, unless you export the registry keys. It also lacks tabbed multiple file editing, but it's not a priority IMHO in a portable editor.

Yeah, these Notepad replacements are a dime a dozen and it's gotten pretty hard to distinguish one from another. But I think NotePad2 is one of the two or three that manage to nudge themselves just ahead of the heap. The program is small and stable(although, unlike Metapad, it requires an install), it has a crapload of options including the must-haves like transparent mode and an Always on Top option (no tabbed files like NoteTab though). The types of files NotePad2 handles and the fact that they're all in their own, relevant style is cool but customizing these options is much harder than it needs to be. All in all; Notepad2 doesn't really excel at much of anything but it doesn't drop the ball on anything either making it a good, solid, text editor that will remain as one of the two or three on my hard drive. (I hope I reviewed the right one though).
