It seems to be installed on every computer you buy. It is a resource hog, and if you got a problem with it, just try their support, it is non existent they dont want to know. If I buy a new computer and its always got Norton pre-installed on it, I uninstall it before I do any thing else and put a better anti virus on there, plenty of free ones out there that are better than Norton.

Impersonal support

When I went online I trialed most of the anti/viral and firewall security for soho on the market. I found Norton to have a corporate mentality and to be very impersonal when it came to support. If you dont need support this program takes a lot of the thinking off your hands but these days so do a lot of other programs some of which are better

Big problems

I work with several networks. I have had two computers which could not be networked for some reason until I uninstalled Norton. I have had two other computers that would not permit installation of Norton due to earlier installs. Tech support costs as much as the cost of the software. Symantec thinks they own your computer. I ditched Norton and went to ..., which is much easier to live with.

I'm sure the product is as effective as anything else, HOWEVER they have no concept of customer service. You just can't contact them. I came close though, I got form letter email response that missed the whole point of my query. AND I am really ticked off with their popups that remind you when the subscription service is close to expiry. They come up every time I open a new application and cannot be easily removed (the default settings are password protected and I don't have the password). They are so annoying to me I let the subscription lapse and will not renew with Norton under any circumstance. It's kind of ironic that they use the same tactic to advertise their product as do the spammers I am trying to avoid. This company has totally alienated me. Buy ... or whatever else you can find...

It has many features, great virus blocking and many other features. It's expensive, but I bought the 2004 version for 10 ($14) which is quite cheap.

Excluded norton from my computer world ..

I used Norton on two different computers (both P4, Windows XP, SP2 upgraded). When active, Norton was causing lock-ups on both computers. Later on, one computer hard drive developed buzzing sound, which went away after I inactivated Norton. After updating with SP2, the Norton Internet Firewall was preventing me from downloading any file bigger than 100 kb. So I switched to AVG antivirus (seems to me to be the best from Panda, McAfee, aVast). It's hard to get support for any Norton product.

Completely worthless software

Forget calling customer service on this one, as they dont provide it. Purchasing an online subscription update was easy, but two weeks after doing so, a virus took my computer down, and all was lost. They tell you its the best, but from who's point of view? This is fake software, its promises are blown out of proportion. Dont bother with it.

I have used and purchased norton antivirus 2002,2003, and 2004.No problems with 2002 and 2003 , but I have run into quite a few problems with 2004, particularly with their live update. I keep getting a reminder to update and when I do I keep getting a popup telling me to go to the TECH. support.This turned out to be a big runaround making you go from screen to screen and told me it was an internal problem and to go through all the steps again. I have written them several E-Mails concerning this matter ( None of which of were answered, by E-Mail or any other means ). The last E-Mail I sent them was to notify them that I was junking their product and getting another ). Also, My computer is completely updated with all the latest equipment.

Gluttonous bloatware

I have a pIV 2.4 GHz system with 256MB RAM and video and sound cards. I tried to install the Norton antivirus software demo that I got with the Intel driver CD. Installation went fine, and the software worked well. However, boot up took over 2 minutes, and the computer tended to slow down considerably when running memory intensive tasks. Things have been fine once I uninstalled the software and started using AVG, which I had been using for my old system. It has picked up every virus that ever got into my system, uses less memory, and is free. On the other hand, you have to keep forking out money for the annual subscription of antivirus database files from Norton. My choice? Go for Norton if you have loads of memory, but plump for AVG otherwise!!
