I've looked at many textual database apps over the years and nothing comes close to keynote. It's one of the few apps I use everyday. This isn't a program that was written on a whim by the author. It's clear that he sat down for a while and clearly thought out every detail of what a perfect information manager should be (from category tabs on top, tree mode within categories, portable/usb friendly command-line options, graphics support, search facilities and more). The only downside... there's no support for other Operating Systems outside of Windows. I hope the Open Source project is picked up and moved forward to address this issue.

Not only is this a very handy software, it's fun and you can create different logs, even index items, etc.. the list goes on. I like the node and tree feature, this is going to be something that takes some getting used to and reading but so far, I am having a blast using it for indexing all my freeware, etc... there are so many ways to use this it's unbelievable. Free?? That's almost unbelievable too, but glad it is! Excellent piece of work here and many thanks to the creator!

I check Sourceforge (Keynote's new home as an open source project) every now and then for any development on the Keynote 2 project. That's because I'm a Keynote loyalist. Still am. But I dropped Keynote after trying Microsoft OneNote. Because of two features most important for my use that the latter has but Keynote doesn't: (1) ON can create outline bulleted/numbered lists; (2) Keynote's unit file (.knt) is the entire structure of notes and nodes which can balloon into an unmanageable size over time; ON's unit file (.one) is a single tab (the "note" in Keynote), thus can be smaller but definitely easier to manage as it can form part of a complex structure of OneNote files that's easily viewable and accessible as a folder tree within OneNote's UI. But inspite of this, DoubleWitt, Keynote still deserves its 5 stars!

I think this is the best program in its category: I already found (and tested) some other programs, but KeyNote is still the best. Furthermore, it uses a little amount of RAM when minimized to an icon in the tray (< 1MB!) The only negative point is that it was discontinued by the author...

I know everyone likes KeyNote. It probably doesn't need another compliment. But I still want to say this is one of the best software I've ever used. It covers all the features as a simple notes application; from encryption to hierarchical free-form input. It couldn't be better!

I wish the author had not abandoned this, but he did. It is a credit to his skill that there is as yet nothing better. Perhaps someone will take up the banner and keep KeyNote going. If not, I look forward to something better. Until then, KeyNote is my choice.

A very good and over-rated program. A few years ago it deserved the 5 star rating - but not today. These reviews should be updated. Keynote is falling well behind current software trends... There are many of the today's features missing in this abandoned project. Move on...

I'm not certain if the author of this program realizes just how popular this application is. I too have tried many other treepad type Information Managers and keynote's ease of use and extended features have made this one of the few applications I use daily. I sincerely hope the author is motivated enough to continue development on this. Thinking out loud: Keynote on a PDA (PPC, Palm, Linux/Zaurus) would be an absolutely perfect match.

After using Keynote for several months, I've found it to be one of THE most useful programs I've ever had. It's the perfect way to organize everything from thoughts to projects; I was hooked from the first day. It's tree-like interface is similar to Windows Explorer. Tabs, like Firefox's, allow for fast switching between notes. Both flexible and usable, Keynote is a must-have for anyone still using Microsoft Word.

I used TreePad+ for several years until I discovered free KeyNote. TreePad is a worthy tree note program but I prefer the simplicity of Keynote, not because it is free but because it is so easy to learn and very intuitive. KeyNote is one of those apps that I use daily and couldn't get along without. Get hooked.

At first, I didn't know if I have the need for taking notes on software. After testing this software, taking notes on computer is more fun than ever! Especially in computer age, we don't know how to write anymore! (My handwriting is bad anyway, sometimes I don't even know what I write) This software lets you customize your notes, icons, tab and so on. It is a great tool to replace your papers and pens!

What can I say. This program is in some aspects more advanced than MicrosoftWord. Yes, I have always missed tabs in Word document, and here I got tabs AND trees!!!. Therefore I started to avoid Word and to use this program for numerous writings that are not that "serious" to need all formatings in word, but also not that "easy" to write them down in Notepad. Simplicity and ease of use got my symphaties right away and in my opinion its great plus is that it isn't overcrowded with many "advanced" features. Just keep it that refreshing simple and keep on doing great job! Looking forward for version 2.00 with all announced improvements!

I have been looking for a software like this for a long time! This replaces MS onenote and whizz folders and is better than both combined. And the great thing is that it is going to remain free. Thank you Snapfiles. Thank you software author. OmiJan

I've used a number of info managers/notetaking databases/PIMs over the years (including HJ Treepad, GoldenSection Notes, ShadowNotes, NetPad), and although all were useful they were all lacking in some respect. All such products tend to have unique features and strengths, requiring that you have a couple in your system to handle different tasks. But as an all-around workhorse, Keynote is the one. I've now been using Keynote for about three years. The option to organize notes in a tree hierarchy, in a tabbed interface, or BOTH (how powerful is that!) provides incredible flexibility. I'm still impressed with the plugin architecture, and the text styles and whiteboard features. The only negative thing I can think to say about it is it doesn't capture web pages accurately, but then no product I've tried does (minor gripe).
