I installed the Gmail Notifier some months ago and have found it to be extremely helpful in letting me know when and what mail I have as soon as I am booted up. It notifies me when and what mail has just arrived when I am working on another site in case I want to see or answer it. It is unobtrusive in the lower right hand of the screen and only pops up long enough for you to read it.
