I downloaded the shareware version, which does not allow you to save the Flash files that are compressed. Therefore, you cannot check whether the compressed files are any good.

No, you can actually see what the compressed file will look like, as well as what size it will have. Please, use the "Preview" and "SWF info" buttons for details on optimized files.
