It does not encrypt asian language folder
This is good program. However, I have found a faulty point with this program. When I tried to encrypt a folder with many subfolders, it encrypted all the folders with English names except the folders with Asian language, such as Chinese. All the pictures under the folder with Chinese name are still seen.

Couldn't be easier
AxCrypt is tiny, quick, and powerful. Most importantly, it's extremely easy to use. To encrypt a file, just right-click it and select from the AxCrypt menu. From the novice user to the expert, this is file encryption for everyone.

Best of breed.
Small footprint, low system resource usage and very stable. Convenient and simple to use. Thoughtfully laid out via drop down context menus. For encryption you couldn't ask for an easier application to use for your pc and for sending files or documents.

Very easy to use, but..
Of all the free encryption utilities, this one is by far the easiest to use. However, anyone with access to the computer can encrypt files without your consent so AxCrypt lacks the added security of systems that use a virtual drive system for encryption such as Cryptainer LE. The filenames remain unchanged when the file is encrypted, although they can be changed separately. The context menu system used by AxCrypt is very simple to use, but lacks the versatility and security of some other programs.

This program gets it done...
Having tried many encryption programs, both shareware and freeware, I found that a lot of them were cumbersome to use, required a lot of keystrokes, etc. But this program does exactly what it's supposed to do, and relatively easy. And it's FREE!!! And the fact that it will encrypt a file up to 4gb is a real plus. My next project will be to send an encrypted file to a computer forensics lab, and see how well it holds up to their attempts to crack it. I do agree with RamirLopez in the fact that if there are others that can access your computer, they could wreak havoc by encrypting files with out your knowledge. Opening the program with a password should be an option. Otherwise a great little program. Kudos to the author.

Amazing concept
Its a extraordinary product. Main features: Fully integrated to windows Explorer in all versions. Use a very strong 128AES ,SHA-1 algorithm. Very easy local files encrypt. Automatic re-encrypt when encrypted files are modified, only clicking the encrypted file, use it and automatically is re-encrypted. Can use a user key and a random secure key, it can be located in any removable drive (diskette, usb drive, etc.) Self-decrypting file are generated, very useful for email to user who dont have axcrypt. You can use the key as default encryption or remember this for decryption on a entire session. No application to run. Its very simple, very useful, no menus, no configuration, no drag and drop and very fast. Its free and has no limits in file size. Take care, do not encrypt system files.

Don't fret over folders
I love this program, but see some people concerned about encrypting folders... Add your files to a zip archive and encrypt the zip. Not only do you get the whole thing encrypted including the directory, but when you close the zip archive it not only re-encrypts, but also wipes the temporary files zip uses to decompress when you open files. Awesome, dude.

I've tried many other encryption programs, both freeware and shareware but none can compare with the ease of operation of AxCrypt. Even a novice can get it up and running in no time. The developers have done an excellent job. Thanks!

Superb utility which can be very useful.
Some ideas on AxCrypt usage are given on the program homepage. I'm a freelance translator and would only like to add one specific idea of how it can be used in our business. Imagine that you have a customer whom you don't know well or don't trust. You have several files to translate. You do your job and then you send the files to the customer but all (or some) of them are encrypted with AxCrypt and though the customer has the files he can't open them without your authorization. The best thing is that he doesn't need any special software installed on his machine to open the files. All he needs for that is the password which will be sent to him as soon as he transfers the payment to you or on any other terms. Certainly the app should be used like this very carefully and only as the last resort but still it's nice to have such a tool in your arsenal.

Excellent program
If you are looking for an easy and integrated encryption program then I say look no further! As far as the member who mentioned no password to protect the program. I would say that begins with basically setting up user settings on XP.

One dangerous omission
This application does not allow password protection. Anybody can encrypt all your files in your absence. I tried other programs to encrypt the AxCrypt.exe, but had no success. (Some of the other opinions I read here made me wonder if we were all talking about the same application. AxCrypt does indeed encrypt and decrypt entire folders.) The only flaw I find is one that I consider quite serious: AxCrypt is a little too convenient for anybody who uses your computer. I find no way to PASSWORD PROTECT the use of AxCrypt, so it stands ready to allow anybody who can get to your computer to encrypt all your files. All such programs should allow the user password protection of the ENCRYPTION program. You should be the only one with the rights to encrypt your files.

This program is a dream for encrypting single files. Easy to use, great functionality. The context menu options make everything a breeze. This is the one to get.

Very good encryption utility
AxCrypt adds a new right-click extension to Windows Explorer making it very easy to use. AxCrypt temporarily caches the password you use, so you can encrypt many files and folders at once. Decryption works transparently, so if you enter the correct password for the first file, then any other file encrypted with the same password will decrypt automatically. This is really a nice feature as things like text files and pictures will remain encrypted on the disk but they will decrypt 'on-the-fly.' You can also right-click on encrypted files and select 'rename.' This will convert the file name to gibberish, hiding what it might contain. But when you decrypt it, the proper filename will display in whatever application you use (MS-Word, Notepad, IrFanView, etc). AxCrypt will also let you encrypt files with an automatic decrypter, so you can send an encrypted file to another person who doesn't have AxCrypt installed. All they need to know is the password.

Simply cannot beat it!
This is an absolutely brilliant, secure, and easy to use program. I've had no problems with it whatsoever! I disagree however with the guy that is having difficulties encrypting by folder and decrypting by folder! All you have to do is right click the folder you want to encrypt, enter the pass-phrase and encrypt it, For decrypting it is also the same! I recommend this to anyone who wants to keep their files and documents secure! Simply just can't beat FREE!

Best file encryptor!!!
This is definitely your best choice for encrypting single files. Uses strong 128 bit aes which in my opinion is the best encryption found. Not only that allows you to create passfiles which store special characters which allow you to open your files from a cd or a usb drive, it makes it so you dont need to remember a password and allows you to have a very strong password which you can use to physically unlock a file. AxCrypt can also make self extracting encrypted files or you can create a decryptor program which you can send to your friends who dont want to install axcrypt. Also includes a secure file shredder and everything is done from right clicking a file. Best of all the program is open sourced and FREE!

Best i've found for my purposes
Tried several others, this is the one. Allows you to open a file with the password and yet leaves it encrypted so no need to re-encrypt unless you change it. Nice. Easy right click interface to encrypt. Will remember a standard encrypting password if you like. All the features I need to encrypt a file or two now and again.

I think i'll find something else.
This is a fine program if all you want to do is encrypt a few files, however if you want to encrypt an entire folder this program encrypts each file separately. This is a pain when you want access to the files inside. You now have to open each separately and put the passphrase for each file you want to open. I will keep looking for a good program that encrypts as a folder and unencrypts as a folder. I know this program can shred files, no big loss because so can Spybot Search and Destroy which nobody should be without.

The best, quickest, and most user friendly
I now agree with the others. I've tried several encryption programs, and this one is the most user friendly and error free of the lot. One program i'd used previously, got very confused when you moved files from folder to folder after encrypting. To the point that it couldn't decrypt them because it was so confused. Axcrypt encrypts them as independent entities in their own right. Hence, they are very portable when encrypted. Very simple. Right click facility installed, which makes it wonderfully convenient.

This has to be the easiest program to use that I've seen. Small footprint, so easy to use that I've found, downloaded, installed and started using it in 10 minutes (and I'm no computer whiz, by any measure!). Thanks to the developers, and to the download site. pete

Easy and effective
I have tried HideFolders, Cryptainer, Abi-coder, and more. This is the easiest of the lot. Everything is available on the right click menu. No searching, no windows, no dragging and dropping. Another fine example of simple, straight forward, effective, and free software.
