anti-spyware and virus scanner Ad-Aware Free is an adware, malware and spyware removal tool that scans your memory, registry, hard, removable and optical drives for known data-mining, aggressive advertising, and tracking components. It then lists the results and offers to remove or quarantine the components. The program detects a wide range of adware/spyware related issues and can be updated with the latest signatures via the built-in update utility. As of version 10, Ad-Aware sports a new interface and comes with real-time virus scanning (powered by Vipre) and download protection. The free version starts out as a 30-day trial with additional Pro features (Firewall, E-Mail protection) enabled. After 30 days, it can be used as free version without the Pro features.

Was fine until latest 'update' download. All I need is free version (only 'excellent' rating that could give) scanner. Now (2012), it wants to install anti-virus, toolbar, etc, etc. Why would I ever go with pay-for version if the free version is so difficult ? showShow review details

Excellent software..One of the best and wont slow your system down. Installs at only 37MB. Put the new version 10 on your shortlist which will be released very soon. It is in Beta right now and available for download on the Lavasoft website..but use at your own risk because it is still Beta and some users have complained it has disabled their antivirus software. When version 10 is final and ready to go...you will not need another antivirus program because Ad Aware comes complete with everything you'll need. The once highly used software by college students has fallen. The interface is pretty good but not enough meat under the hood. The software just missed some obvious data-mining and tool bars that was installed on my test machine. showShow review details
