File Management

freeCommander is a dual-panel file explorer with many additional features. In addition to the standard file management features, it can be used to compare directories, display folder sizes, synchronize folders and more. The program can also open/create ZIP and CAB files, and open RAR files, as well as search inside those archives. You can set view filters, create folder list (for printing), change file attributes, launch a command prompt, take a desktop screenshot and more.

Attribute Changer allows you to easily change attributes for single or multiple files and folders. Possible changes include Read-only, Hidden, System, Archive, Compress, Index as well as file/folder dates. If you need to change attributes on multiple files, you can use the provided filter options to limit the process by date, time, size and other attributes. Attribute Changer integrates into the Windows Explorer right-click menu, and the interface is available by clicking on Change Attributes.

Fast Duplicate File Finder can help you find duplicate files that are located in one or more folders. The duplicates are presented as groups and you can either manually check the files to be processed or use the auto-check feature to automatically check files with older file dates. Additional options allow you to exclude files from being auto-checked if they match certain criteria (extension, size, string etc.). The selected files can then be deleted or moved to a different folder. Other features include an integrated preview, system file protection, support for removable media and more.

Easy Duplicate File Finder can help you to find and delete duplicate files. The program scans selected folders or drives and produces a list of all files that have the exact same content. You can then choose to delete all of them or only selected files. Other features include exclusion of system files and folders,as well as filtering by file mask and size.

eXpress TimeStamp Toucher is a simple utility that allows you to change the date attributes of all files in a selected folder and optional sub-folders. You can set the three date values (modified, last accessed, created) individually or use the same value for all of them.

UltraExplorer is a Windows Explorer alternative that provides a customizable interface and additional features. You can group the file display by name, type, date or other aspects or navigate in column mode in addition to the standard view modes. You can also browse folders in tabs, filter folder content, quickly access recently used folders, maintain a list of favorites, and more. UltraExplorer also offers convenient ways to copy file names or folder paths, view folder sizes and Drop Stack to collect files from multiple locations.

Ycopy provides a simple interface to help copy large numbers of files from one disk or folder to another. Unlike the regular Windows copy option, which stops on errors, Ycopy continues to copy to the end, and then presents you with a log file of all encountered errors (if any). The program cannot copy files that are in use, it is not intended to duplicate a drive, but just for simple copy operations.

Duplicate Cleaner is an easy-to-use program that helps you to find and remove duplicate files on your computer. You can search multiple folder structures at once, and set criteria that identify the duplicates. You can choose to search for exact matches using CRC comparison or use the file name, size and date as criteria. The program offers extended support for music files, allowing you to use the ID tag information (artist, title, album) to identify duplicate tracks. The results are grouped in a list and a selection assistant enables you to quickly select files based on age, audio quality, location and other aspects.

Mass Directory Eraser is a simple tool that enables you to quickly delete a large number of files and folders. If you have ever deleted a large folder structure with thousands of files, you probably noticed that it can take quite some time for Windows to complete this procedure. Mass Directory Eraser can do the same in about 2 seconds. Careful though, the files are not sent to the recycle bin.

Q-Dir is a multi-pane file explorer that enables you to arrange up to 4 separate Window Explorer views (quadro-view) while maintaining all standard Explorer features. It also offers a variety of file additional management features including color coded file filters, customizable layouts and columns, quick access to favorite file and folder, and more. Other features include export of directory listings (.txt, .doc, .html, .csv), color themes, network support, support for all Explorer views and more.

FileSeek enables you to search your computer for files that match a specified keyword or string. The program not only searches for matching file names but also scans the content of the files and provides an excerpt of the text containing the keyword. You can use simple keyword searches as well as Regular Expression queries and limit the results to certain folders or file types. FileSeek can optionally be integrated with the Windows Explorer right-click menu for files and folders. The program does not use any background indexing which makes it a little slower than others but does not require it to be running, unless you actually use it.

SuperCopier is an advanced replacement for the standard Windows copy command. It supports pause and resume of ongoing copy operations, adjustable copy speed settings, automatic renaming of old files and more. You can view a detailed list of the copy queue and optionally move files up or down the list, add additional files and also remove or skip items as needed. This features are particularly useful when you are copying large amounts of files. Other features include error management and logging, an option to save/load copy lists, customizable buffer settings and more.

ExamDiff is a tool for visual file comparison of two text or html files. After selecting the two files to compare, ExamDiff will display them in a split screen and highlight all the differences The program offers a variety of handy features, like copying of text from the comparison panes via drag and drop and one push re-compare function which attempts to leave the viewer s focus in the same place as before the re-compare. ExamDiff can also remember a user specified number of last compared first and second files and saves the file differences in a standard UNIX DIFF file. The interface is clean,compact and there are several options to customize the comparison process, for example by ignoring white spaces and more.

FolderViewer is a Windows Explorer replacement that can be used to browse folder content, print, preview, (un)pack and organize MS Office documents, MP3 files, Photos and much more. The program integrates with IE and provides a built in browser as well as a text editor with syntax coloring, image viewer, media player, and more

WinMerge is a visual text comparison application, that allows you to see the highlighted differences between 2 text based files. It is in particular useful for comparing source codes, and offers optional support for Visual SourceSafe syntax highlighting, customizable highlight colors and more. The program allows you to go through all found differences and then merge each instance by either replacing them on the right or the left side.

JExplorer is a dual-panel file manager with integrated web browser, that provides many advanced features such as compressor/decompressor (ZIP, RAR, CAB and others), FTP file transfer, POP3 email monitor, MAPI mail sender, directory comparison, and Dial-up Networking support. JExplorer provides network support, so you can open a local, as well as a remote drive at the same time, compare files, drag/drop and more.

AptDiff enables you to visually compare text and binary files. You can view the color-coded differences in two files side-by-side, and optionally merge lines from the left to the right or vice versa. The program can also export the side-by-side comparison to a nicely formatted HTML page for publishing on the web. Other features include file backup, customizable color coding, full Unicode support and more.

Folder Size is a handy shell extension that adds a `Folder Size` column to the Windows Explorer which displays - you guessed correctly - the total size of the folder in the details view. You can sort the column just like any other column, and use it to replace the standard File Size column since it also displays the size of individual files. A simple enhancement that should have probably come with Windows from the start.

Intelligent Copier is an automatic file mover and copier. It offers a window that you can drag files onto, and will then copy or move them based on your settings. For example, you could choose to move all .mp3 files into the C:Music folder or copy any .doc file into your My Documents folder etc. In addition, you can automatically skip a file that is older than an existing one or to overwrite existing files. Intelligent Copier runs in the system tray and can log all actions for later reference. Free for personal use.

NexusFile is a dual-pane file manager that offers fast, color coded file management with many advanced features. You can easily copy or move files between folders, quickly navigate to favorite folders, change file and folder attributes, perform advanced renaming operations, manage archives and much more. The program offers a modern interface with customizable color schemes for file types, transparency support and custom view styles. In addition to traditional file management, NexusFile offers FTP transfers, folder comparison and synchronization, file splitting and joining, disk cleanup, file shredding, extended keyboard shortcuts and more.

Marxio File Checksum Verifier enables you to calculate and verify checksums of files downloaded from the internet or stored on your computer. You can copy/paste a checksum from the clipboard and also save it as verification file along with the original file. ExplorerXP is a small and compact file manager that allows you to view, edit, copy, move, rename and delete files and folders using a drag-and-drop interface. Unlike the regular Windows Explorer, it displays the total size of for each folder and allows you to browse multiple folder from a tabbed interface. It also includes an option to split and merge files, and to select or delete files based on wildcards.

File Commander helps you save time when organizing the files on your disk. If you find that you re moving, copying, or deleting the same files over and over, you can use it to create a simple command that does it for you with a single click. Just use the File Command interface (right click and select New Command) and specify the actions to take place (e.g move all images from this folder to the Img folder) and the next time you want to perform the action, all you have to do is click on the newly create command link in the folder. File commander supports copy, move and delete operations; it can process files by wildcard, confirm actions and automatically rename duplicates.

Folder Marker is a handy shell extension that enables you to quickly change folder icons to indicate a priority level or project status (high, low, done, half-done, planned etc.), or you can use it to mark a folder with a special icon or color of your choice. Simply right-click on any folder and select the icon or color to be used from the newly added menu option. Folder Marker supports single and multiple folder selections, and includes an option to restore the original icon(s).

CSDiff is a visual file comparison tool, that allows you to easily spot differences between two different versions of a (text based) files. The program present the changes in an easy to understand display, that shows you the removed lines, as well as newly added parts. You can also compare entire folders and create HTML output from the results.

RoteBetaSoftware Folder Size is a simple tool that display the size of folders (and sub-folders) as bar charts. The chart display is interactive, and you can click on a bar to create an overview for the underlying folder structure, and also filter the display by file types. Does not require installation and is easy to use.

CheckFolder is a simple tool, that allows you to check if all files in a folder or drive can be read. It can be used to find corrupted files or to verify files on a CD or DVD.

EZ Fld Fx compares two directory structures with sub-directories and sums up the difference in an easy to understand display. You can see which files are not present in the other folder or which ones have been added. Files can be compared based on size and date.

Doc Scrubber allows you to view and optionally remove the hidden information contained in Microsoft .doc files. The information contains your registered name, editing time, revision information with names of users that have edited the file and more. While this information can be very useful for internal purpose, it may not be appropriate for distribution, so this little program allows you to scrub the file(s) and output a clean copy, or overwrite the originals.

Pablo Commander is a Norton Commander clone, that offers a side-by-side Explorer view. It enables you to compare the contents of two folders, drag and drop files across panes, filter the display, display the content of an FTP site and more. The program is lightweight and does not easy to use, as it uses an interface that is very similar to Windows Explorer, and also integrates the Explorer right click menu.

SizeMe enables you to easily calculate how many CDs, DVDs or other media you need in order to burn a selected directory. The program creates a layout to fill each disc up as much as possible, which you can simply drag and drop to your CD/DVD burning software and start to burn the media. You can also create ISO images from all or selected media collection, so that you can burn them later.

File Sieve is a small tool that can take the files from a directory and copy or move them into a new folder, while creating subfolders from A-Z and sorting the files into them based on their name (first letter). The program can come handy if you want to organize files for archiving, or to put them on a CD.

Textview allows to quickly review large collections of text files, like i.e. CD-ROMs full of source codes or extensive web-projects with many html-, java- and other scripts. It displays an Explorer-like directory view with filter functions and file managing commands like copy, move, delete, rename and create. Text can be copied or appended to the clipboard. Additional features include full Unicode support, wordwrap, search, favorite folders, sorting, launch of external text editor and more. This program can only view the files - not edit them!

V-Grep is a text search and replace tool with support for Regular Expressions, that enables you to find text occurrences based on simple a simple string match or complex patterns and replace them with a new word, sentence or value. The program is designed to provide a Windows version of the Unix GREP command, and includes a guide to Regular Expressions, as well as a testing tool to practice and verify complex search patterns. The results are presented with highlighted result matches and excerpts, and can be exported to text or HTML. You can further drill into the result set by opening individual results and perform search and replace inside a single file, or batch replace within the entire result set.

CubicExplorer is a file manager with a tabbed interface and integrated search functionality. You can quickly access your favorite folders by creating custom categories with shortcuts to selected folders. The program offers a clean and easy to use interface, but other than the tabbed display, there aren`t many features that set it apart from the standard Windows Explorer.

Anti-Twin is a simple tool that helps you find and delete duplicate files on your hard drive. You can scan an entire folder structure or scan for duplicates in two selected folders. The results are presented as a list of file names and you can choose to delete the duplicates. The program lacks documentation and the list of duplicates does not show the file details or date, making it difficult to decide which file to delete.

Visual Subst enables you to create virtual drives letters from any existing folder, allowing you to shorten the path to access the files by simply accessing the them via the newly created drive letter. For example, a long path like `C:Documents and SettingsUserMy Photosamily Album` could be easily accessed via the drive letter P:, acting as a shortcut to the actual folder. The virtual drive letters act just like any other drive letter and are accessible from all applications. Visual Subst is not only useful for convenient access, but can also become handy for developers who need to work with (script) files from another computer that use different drive letter paths in their configuration.

WilLoW and Boupy is a utility to manage and index your removable disc collection (CD, Audio CD, Hard Drives, DVD, Lan Drives...) It offers special support for mp3 files, including features like tag editing, playlists, file renaming and more. The program is not limited to mp3 files though, but can be used for many other types of media files as well. You can also save lists as HTML files, and use the AutoDJ feature to choose music for you. Requires WinAmp if you want player support.

Unix2Win is a simple utility that can convert ASCII text files from Unix to Microsoft Windows format or vice versa. It supports drag and drop. The free version can only convert a single file at a time, a Pro version can be purchased for batch conversions.

SnapFolders allows you to easily create shortcuts to your favorite folders with a single click. You can choose to open the folder in a two-pane Explorer windows or the regular one folder view. The shortcuts you create with SnapFolders are automatically placed on the Start Menu or a side menu to the Start Menu. SnapFolders uses regular Windows shortcuts, you could do the same by dragging a folder from Windows explorer to the Start menu, however this application makes it a little easier and also lets you define additional options that allow you to customize the behavior.

SetFileDate enables you to easily change the Created, Modified and/or Accessed date and time of one or more selected files. The additional folder mode allows you to change the dates for entire folder with subfolders at once, optionally limiting the change to certain file extension and name.

BatchTransfer is a Windows Explorer shell extension that allows you to transfer files in a batch. Simply select a number of files from within Windows Explorer, right click and select BatchTransfer to add files to a transfer queue. You can then decide to move or copy the files to a specified directory and also set options for file overwriting. In addition, the program can resolve shortcuts and can optionally transfer the actual target file instead of the shortcut link.

SWF Live Preview enables you to preview SWF files as thumbnails in Windows Explorer. It automatically creates a cache from directories (optional subdirectories) for faster thumbnail display, and allows you to select the frame to be used as preview image, as well as the size of the thumbnail. In addition, the program adds a new tab to the file properties dialog that displays detailed information about the Flash file selected, including Flash version, number of frames, compression and more.

CarbonFolder enables you to synchronize files between two folders on your local PC or network. You can create and save multiple projects, choose between unidirectional or bidirectional synchronization, and also exclude/include files by mask. The program offers an easy to use step-by-step interface.

Pathbuddy lets you define hotkeys for selecting folders in almost any program's Open & Save dialog as well as Windows Explorer. Normally, when you open a Save dialog, you need to navigate to the folder that you want to use, which can often be annoying. Pathbuddy allows you to switch the dialog to any of your favorite folders instantly, by simply pressing the WinKey + a custom letter/number. So for example, if I wanted to save a file in C: estfileswebattacketc - I could just press WinKey+W on my keyboard to switch the dialog to that folder. If you don't want to remember all your shortcuts, you can press WinKey+A at any time to bring up a list that allows you to simply select the folder. The program does not launch any folders by itself, it only works with Open/Save dialogs.

AutoCAD Version Explorer (AVE) enables you to browse folders that contain AutoCAD files and view thumbnail previews along with version information and other file properties. It can also export the thumbnails and file details to a HTML page with customizable column layout, zip files into an archive, and optionally integrated with Windows Explorer for convenient folder browsing from the right click menu. Standalone, no install needed.

Handy File Tool is a dual pane file manager that allows you to open two folders or drives simultaneously. It offers a file basket that you can use to collect files from different locations into a basket drive, and then process batch process them. The program supports common file operations (copy, move, delete) and also includes a file renaming tool and a text search/replace tool. While the basket feature is handy, the rest of the functionalities are below average. Handy File Tool also nags you with a splash screen that advertises other products by the author every time you close the program.

MacExplorer is an alternative free Windows explorer program to analyze Macintosh files stored on Windows NT, 2000 or XP. It features automatic connection to Macintosh Servers and to the Macintosh volumes and can recognize invalid volumes. It displays and can modify the Type/Creator codes and type of the files (XPress, Photoshop, Word, etc.), allowing a Windows user to know the kind of the files without their 3 characters extensions. You can also open Macintosh files without their Windows 3 characters extensions and more. MacExplorer recognizes volumes which have been created by standard Microsoft Services for Macintosh (MacFile), Cyan Software MacServerIP and Intergraph ExtremeZ-IP.

MiTeC DirList is a simple, but fast loading file browser that allows you to browse all connected disks and generate reports for files and directories. The reports can be exported to HTML or CSV format or sent to your printer. You can optionally filter the list by extension and keyword contained in the file name, and also choose to include sub-directories. Standalone program, no install needed.

SE-Explorer is a simple dual-pane file manager that offers tabs for folder browsing as well as several built-in viewers including XML structure view, DOC viewing, image browsing, integrated media playback with playlist support, hex view and more. The program also includes a search feature that allows you to find files, folders, text within files, tagged files and disk summary reporting.

Simpli-File Statistics allows you to gather various statistics about a selected folder. It calculates the total number and size of the files, file types, the largest/smallest, oldes/newest file and more. It can also gather statistics on the file lines, but this is only recommended on smaller files. The information can only be read, but not saved or processed any further.

SurF is a unique file manager that offers tree organized tabs, allowing you to work with multiple folders simultaneously and easily switch between them. It offers customizable view settings and quick access to standard file management features such as delete, copy, rename and others. You can also access all regular Explorer options via the standard right-click menu. Other features include real-time highlighting of changed files (briefly, for one second), support for advanced NTFS capabilities and symbolic links, network support, keyboard navigation and more.

TaggedFrog is a tag based file organizer that allows you to assign keyword tags to files, documents and URLs. You can drag and drop an object onto the GUI, assign one or more keywords and then located files from the tag cloud by simply clicking on the keyword. The tag cloud automatically emphasizes tags that are used frequently and categorizes objects by document type. TaggedFrog does not move or modify any files, it only acts as a reference to locate or access them.

Auslogics Duplicate File Finder helps you find duplicate files that may be scattered all over your hard drive(s). The program can compare files based on size, date, content and name. You can select multiple folders (with sub-folders) or an entire drive to be scanned, specify the methods used to determine duplicate files and then view the list of results and delete the files that you no longer need.

New Folder Wizard enables you to quickly create large numbers of new folders (and sub-folders) based on a custom naming template. You can build the new folder names by using a prefix, a suffix and an incremental number pattern, or by importing a list of names from a text file (e.g user names, month names, project lists etc.). The program allows you to preview the list of folders before they are created and can also copy the list of new folder names to the clipboard.
