Papel is a unique text editor that was designed to provide an intuitive workspace for creative writers. It enables you to visually arrange the components of your story, and quickly edit them without the need to open any additional files. You can create icons within the workspace area, that contain the plot outline, notes, scenes, individual characters and other aspects of your story. Each icon opens a simple notepad-style dialog to type your content. Papel includes a spell checker and thesaurus, as well as an option to import existing text files.

EditPad is a Windows NotePad replacement, that can open as many files at a time as you want. You change between the open files by clicking on their tabs. No hassle with heaps of overlapping windows. The program offers a clean, uncluttered interface with custom toolbar and user tools launch options, debugging features, customizable syntax colors and much more. In addition, Syn supports projects, several import/export features as well as FTP upload and download.

ConTEXT is a small, fast and powerful text editor, developed mainly to serve as secondary tool for software developers. It offers syntax highlighting support for the most popular scripting languages, inclding HTML, PHP, Java, VB, SQL, Python, Perl and many others - and of course plain .txt files. It also includes a macro recorder, project support, bookmarks and much more. ConTEXT is highly customizable and allows you to change syntax highlighting colors, cursor shapes, right margin, gutter, line spacing as well as user definable execution keys and other things. Additional features include find/replace, compiler support, code templates, file explorer and others.

Crimson Editor is a professional source editor for Windows. While it can serve as a good replacement for Notepad, it also offers many powerful features for programming languages such as HTML, C/C++, Perl and Java. It offers Syntax Highlighting for HTML, C/C++, Perl, Java, Matlab and LaTeX and can be extended for other programming languages based on custom syntax files. Additional features include multi-level undo/redo, user tools, macros, spell checker, bookmarks, print support, FTP support and much more.

AbiWord is a free word processing program similar to Microsoft Word. It is suitable for typing papers, letters, reports, memos and any other document. The program has an attractive, professional interface and all the features you need. In addition, it offers various plug-ins that can be added to further enhance the functionality. Currently available plug-ins include several imaging tools, encyclopedia, Babelfish translation, scripting support and various others. AbiWord comes with a built-in spell checker, auto-text macros, save as web page option and much more. A very nice and well established open-source alternative to commercial word processing programs.

Notepad2 is a small and fast editor with syntax highlighting for HTML and other common languages and many other useful features, including drag and drop, regular expression search and replace, brace matching, line numbers, keyboard shortcuts, whitespace display, zooming and more. Notepad2 offers support for Unicode, UTF-8, Unix and Mac text files.

GetDiz is a small viewer for .DIZ and .NFO files. Many downloadable ZIP archives have DIZ and NFO files included within them. They are simple text files that can be viewed with Notepad, but GetDiz is a text-viewer especially designed for those files, it can be automatically launched whenever you click on a .diz or .nfo file.

nPad2 is a notepad-like source viewer and editor with support for syntax highlighting (HTML, PHP, ASP, C++, Object Pascal, Java, Basic). It is mostly intended as a notepad replacement,source code viewer or as a portable editor for small projects. In addition to the syntax highlighting, it also offers line numbers, special character display, search/replace and supports drag and drop.

RJ TextEd is a full featured text editor with Unicode support, syntax highlighting and code folding. The functionality extends well beyond text files and includes support for common HTML editing features with integrated preview, spell checking, auto completion, HTML validation, templates and more. The program also includes a CSS editor and a dual pane file commander, , as well as a FTP client to upload your files and several small tools to help with daily tasks (color picker, unit converter and others).

PFE is a large-capacity, multi-file editor. Although it`s primarily oriented towards program developers and contains features like the ability to run compilers and development applications, it also makes a very good general purpose editor, that works well with extremely large files - it can open and edit a 1 GB log file without problems. This is an old software, but it still works like a charm

Metapad is a small and fast text editor that was designed to completely replace the standard Windows Notepad since it includes all of Notepad`s features and much, much more. Metapad`s additional features include persistent window placement, Intelligent Find and Replace, External viewer support (e.g. web browser) , Usable accelerator keys (Ctrl+S, Ctrl+N, etc.), Dual customizable font support, Auto-indent mode, Recent files list WYSIWYG printing, enhanced status bar & toolbar and more! Unlike the Win 9x notepad, metapad does not impose a file size limit. On top of all, Metapad offers hyperlink support, so any web link you type or read in a text file can be clicked and launched in your browser.

Win32Pad is a replacement for the default Windows notepad with a programmer in mind. It offers several enhancements, including unlimited file size, line numbers, recent file list, file change notification, WIN/MAC/UNIX format support, system tray icon and more. The program also offers support for URLs, it automatically highlights them and lets you click on them to launch your browser. Additional features include drag and drop, Find/Replace, Goto Line, time stamp and more. Amazingly small with 70 kb, including the installer.

Popular text editor and Notepad replacement. Tabbed interface provides easy access to all open documents. Can search and replace multi-line criteria across all open documents, with support for regular expressions. The editor can open links and preview documents in any web browser. NoteTab Light, is a freeware program, the commercial equivalent, NoteTab Standard, adds a spell checker, thesaurus, outline documents, and more for just $9.95. It's your choice!

Xint is an alternative to Windows notepad, that looks very similar, but in fact offers dozens of additional features. They include additional formatting options (URL encoding, CSV conversion, HTML stripping, A-Z sorting), as well as browser preview, word count, case conversions and more. Xint also includes an enhanced search and replace features, a hex color picker, date insert and more. In addition, the program even includes a built-in encryption feature, allowing you to secure a file, using 160-bit Twofish encryption.

CPad is an advanced text/code editor with syntax highlighting, code templates and support for over 50 (code) languages (C/C++, VB, PHP, ...). It also comes with a built-in hex editor, difference viewer, spell-checker, integrated browser preview, clipboard viewer and more. Additional features include quick access to commonly used form and HTML tags, search and replace, open from FTP server, visual HTML editing mode and more. CPad supports plug-ins, so the functionality can be easily extended.

Jarte is a textwith a unique interface and many features. It uses the Windows built-in word processing engine at its core, but offers far more functionality then WordPad. This makes Jarte a great replacement for both the WordPad word processor and the NotePad text editor programs. Jarte opens rich text and plain text documents including DOC documents created with Microsoft Word 95, Word 97, or Word 2000. Some of the features include multi-document support, formatting tools, customizable background pattern and color schemes as well as clip functions, spell check, multi-level undo and much more. If you can get used to the interface, it can make a handy word processor for everyday tasks.

EDXOR is a versatile, convenient and optimal text editor and data processor. It offers innovative clipboard handling, cryptographic options and logic text conversions, great for education, fun, or privacy. EDXOR is very fast and can edit large files, limited only by the capacity of your system. Supports drag-and-drop, file associations and command line. EDXOR provides over 60 menu items and custom-built data processing functions for professional applications.

SuperEdi is a versatile editor that allows you to edit text files on your home PC as well as on a remote server via FTP. The build-in directory tree helps you locate files quickly without opening the Windows Explorer. Context sensitive information is available via keyword lookup in any Windows help file or even in the MSDN library. Extend SuperEdi with text clips, user defined tools and automation scripts. Additional features include syntax coloring, user defined document types and bookmarks.

MDINotepad offers everything you need when editing text files. It includes features like a multiple document interface (MDI), customizable toolbar, support for large files, a tool for fast file browsing, an Overview window, an Open files menu, customizable Open/Save filters, a recent documents menu and many useful functions like Execute, Open with, Bookmark, Stay on top, (file) Properties, Replace, Replace special, Crop, Highlight, Reload, Auto paste, Paste/Copy special (with functions like Append, Remove Characters, Copy highlighted, strip HTML...) and more.

CopyWriter is a lightweight general purpose text editor with both wordprocessing and editing capabilities. It tries to fill the gap between basic text editors and mid-range wordprocessors, by offering an uncluttered interface (similar to Notepad), yet some basic text formating options (bold, italic, underline, font size etc.). Additional features include various shortcut keys, favorites manager and more.

evolvEd Text Editor is a general purpose text editor, with special support for HTML and scripting languages. It offers customizable syntax highlighting, built-in function tips, tag completion, template support and much more. Besides the standard text editing functions, it also includes various handy features, including browser preview, file insertion, bracket matching, line numbers, word count, export to Rich Text, HTML color picker and more.

DocPad is a feature-rich alternative to Notepad. In addition to the standard features, it offers many advantages including a 10-level undo system, alphabetization, block indent/unindent, bookmark, case conversion, encoding conversion, file history, jump to line, jump to offset, keyboard macros, search and replace, spell checker, statistics, variable pitch font, and more. DocPad also includes a built-in calculator, calendar, and character map.

Shalom Txt is a text editor, meant for editing flat text files with no formatting. It offers all the standard functions including printing, print preview, popup menu, toolbar, find and replace, recent files list etc. In addition, it includes several string manipulating tools like: Add To Each Line, Remove Characters From Each Line, Remove From Each Line, Frame Lines and more.

QJot is a small, rich text editor that can open and save .doc files. It offers most common editing functions, including text formatting, inserted images and objects, paragraph/line spacing, undo and more. It supports drag and drop, offers a recent documents list, word count and more. QJot also includes a spell checker, however it was not working properly during our review.

subpad is a notepad clone that offers all the standard Notepad features, and a few extras, including clickable URLs and a faster find/replace feature. It also comes with a handy feature that lets you roll-up the window by right-clicking on the title bar. Some additional extras include close n ESC, unlimited Undo/Redo, Block Indent/Unindent, and option to run external tools and more.

Inedita is a text editor with a tabbed interface which allows the opening of multiple documents in a single window. It offers a refreshing interface and supports syntax highlighting for many popular scripting languages (PHP, ASP, HTML, Java etc.). In addition, to the standard Notepad features, it also offers macro recording and playback, line numbering, clipboard viewer, favorite files list and more. Inedita can run in the system tray for quick access when needed.

Angel Writer is a rich text editor that allows you to create formatted documents and save them in .RTF, .TXT or HTML format. It offers all the standard word processor features, including support for tables, images, font styles, web links and more.

MetaPath is an add-on for the popular MetaPad notepad replacemnt. It offers a small Explorer-like window with filter functions, that lets you quickly open files in an existing Metapad window. It automatically opens the directory of the currently opened file, and offers additional file management commands like copy, move, delete, rename and create. A handy add-on for every MetaPad user.
